Second Shift Machining Supervisor PGI Mfg | Peru Illinois | Second Shift 3:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Role focus Production leadership, workflow coordination, employee accountability, and practical machining support on second shift. Position Summary PGI Mfg is seeking a Second Shift Machining Supervisor to lead second-shift machining operations and take ownership of shift results. The supervisor will turn production priorities into clear daily assignments, keep employees and machines aligned with the schedule, remove barriers to progress, and communicate an accurate shift handoff to plant leadership. This position balances production leadership with practical machining knowledge. The successful candidate must be able to direct the shift, hold employees accountable, and keep scheduled work moving while also understanding CNC setups, tooling, offsets, prints, inspection requirements, and common machining problems. The supervisor should be capable of helping operators resolve routine issues and determining when Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, or another technical resource is needed. Primary Responsibilities
- Lead second-shift employees and maintain a visible, consistent presence on the production floor.
- Review the production schedule and first-shift handoff, establish shift priorities, and communicate clear expectations at the start of the shift.
- Assign employees and machines based on production needs, employee qualifications, available capacity, due dates, and operational constraints.
- Monitor work throughout the shift and adjust staffing, assignments, and priorities when production conditions change.
- Track job progress, output, downtime, scrap, rework, labor utilization, and schedule completion; act promptly when performance moves off plan.
- Coordinate the flow of material, tooling, fixtures, documentation, inspection, and support resources needed to keep scheduled work moving.
- Provide practical floor support with questions, machine alarms, dimensional issues, and other routine machining problems.
- Set expectations for attendance, productivity, quality, safety, housekeeping, teamwork, and workplace conduct, and address concerns consistently.
- Coach employees in real time, provide constructive feedback, recognize strong performance, and document or escalate recurring performance concerns.
- Ensure required first-piece, in-process, and final inspection activities are completed and documented before work advances.
- Maintain accurate shift records and provide a complete handoff covering production status, staffing, downtime, quality concerns, and unfinished priorities.
- Support continuous improvement in workflow, standard work, setup coordination, scrap prevention, and machine utilization.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience leading, coordinating, or directing employees in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work, manage changing demands, and keep multiple jobs moving.
- Ability to communicate expectations clearly, provide feedback, resolve routine employee concerns, and hold employees accountable.
- Sound judgment and the ability to make timely production decisions when first-shift leadership is not present.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing documentation, production schedules, job travelers, work instructions, and quality requirements.
- Solid working knowledge of CNC machining, tooling, fixtures, offsets, precision measurement, and common production issues.
- Ability to assist operators with routine machining problems and recognize when a more complex programming, engineering, quality, or maintenance issue must be escalated.
- Basic computer skills, including email, production reporting, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Availability to work the complete second-shift schedule and additional hours when operational needs require. Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Production Supervisor, Shift Supervisor, Team Lead, Cell Lead, or similar manufacturing leader.
- Experience coordinating production in a CNC machining, close-tolerance, high-mix, low-volume, or custom manufacturing environment.
- Experience supporting horizontal machining centers, palletized equipment, or similar CNC production operations.
- Experience tracking production performance, downtime, scrap, labor utilization, and schedule completion.
- Experience training employees, supporting performance management, and working within a documented quality-management system.
- Familiarity with continuous-improvement and root-cause problem-solving practices. What PGI Offers
