Production Technician - Artist Materials Manufacturing Natural Pigments is a small manufacturer of high-quality artist materials located in Willits, California. We make traditional and specialty artists' colors and materials, including pigments, oil colors, watercolors, mediums, wax-based paints, and related products for artists, conservators, and art-materials specialists. We are hiring a full-time Production Technician to support and perform hands-on manufacturing of small-batch artist materials. This is a physically active production role that involves handling heavy raw materials, operating mixing and processing equipment, filling containers, cleaning equipment, and maintaining accurate production records. This is not an assembly-line position. The work requires strength, stamina, attention to materials, process discipline, cleanliness, documentation, and consistency. The person hired will be trained across multiple production processes so the company can maintain production continuity, improve written procedures, and share critical production knowledge across the team. Pay and Schedule $20.00-$25.00 per hour, depending on relevant experience Full-time, nonexempt hourly position Monday-Friday day shift Typical schedule: 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a 30-minute unpaid meal period Onsite work in Willits, California Primary Responsibilities Manufacture small-batch artist materials according to written formulas, batch records, production procedures, and supervisor instructions. Weigh, measure, prepare, mix, grind, mill, fill, label, package, and organize artist materials and related products. Handle bulk raw materials, including 50 lb bags of pigments and fillers, pails of oils, resins, binders, waxes, mediums, and other production materials. Load materials into mixers and processing equipment safely and accurately. Operate and clean production equipment of various capacities, including mixers up to 50 gallons, mills, scales, filling tools, worktables, containers, label printers, and other small manufacturing equipment. Work with pigments, powders, oils, waxes, resins, binders, solvents, containers, labels, packaging materials, and finished goods. Prepare work areas, materials, tools, and equipment before production. Follow batch sheets, formulas, lot-number procedures, production logs, and quality-control checklists. Inspect materials and finished products for consistency, cleanliness, correct fill, correct labeling, lot information, packaging quality, and general appearance. Maintain accurate written production records, including batch information, material usage, lot numbers, inventory notes, production observations, and quality-control checks. Clean equipment, tools, containers, work surfaces, floors, and production areas according to company procedures. Use required personal protective equipment and follow safety procedures when handling powders, pigments, oils, waxes, resins, solvents, and other production materials. Help identify production problems, material inconsistencies, equipment issues, labeling errors, inventory discrepancies, or process concerns and report them promptly. Assist with packaging, inventory preparation, shipping-support tasks, warehouse organization, and other production-related work when needed. Help document and improve standard operating procedures so production knowledge is shared and repeatable. Cross-train on multiple production processes and cooperate with coworkers to maintain consistent output in a small-team environment. Physical Requirements This is physical production work. The employee must be able to perform the following essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation: Lift, carry, push, pull, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Handle and move 50 lb bags of pigments, fillers, and related dry materials. Handle pails and containers of oils, binders, resins, waxes, mediums, and other production materials. Stand and walk for much of the workday. Bend, reach, stoop, squat, grip, twist, and work at production tables, mixers, shelves, and storage areas. Load raw materials into mixers and containers. Use carts, dollies, hand trucks, or team lifting when appropriate. Perform repetitive hand and arm movements during filling, labeling, packaging, cleaning, and material handling. Work around powders, pigments, oils, waxes, resins, solvents, and other materials while wearing required PPE. Work in a production environment where surfaces, containers, tools, and equipment must be kept clean and organized. Required Qualifications Ability to work onsite in Willits, California. Reliable attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts. Ability to perform physically active production work safely and consistently. Ability to follow written formulas, batch instructions, safety procedures, and supervisor directions. Strong attention to detail, especially with weights, measurements, labels, lot numbers, written records, and product appearance. Ability to perform careful, repetitive hands-on work while maintaining accuracy and consistency. Ability to work cleanly and maintain an organized production area. Basic math skills, including weighing, measuring, counting, and recording quantities. Ability to read, write, and complete production records clearly and accurately. Comfortable working with powders, pigments, oils, waxes, resins, solvents, and other production materials while using required PPE. Willingness to learn specialized production processes and accept correction, retraining, and feedback. Ability to work cooperatively in a small team where priorities may change during the day. Must be at least 18 years old because the position involves manufacturing equipment and chemical-material handling. Preferred Qualifications Experience in small-batch manufacturing, paint, ink, pigments, coatings, cosmetics, ceramics, food production, laboratory work, packaging, warehouse, or similar hands-on production work. Experience handling bulk raw materials, bags, pails, containers, or production ingredients. Experience operating or assisting with mixers, mills, filling equipment, scales, label printers, inventory systems, hand tools, or similar production equipment. Experience weighing ingredients, following formulas, using batch sheets, completing production logs, or working from standard operating procedures. Mechanical aptitude and comfort learning how equipment works, how it is cleaned, and how to identify when something is not operating properly. Interest in artists' materials, pigments, color, painting, conservation, craft manufacturing, or traditional materials.
