RMD LUXURY WINDOW TREATMENTS
Poolesville, MD Serving the DMV Artisan Full-Time Reports to the Production Team Lead $18
- 25/hour, based on experience and performance
ABOUT RMD
With an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, design excellence, and white-glove service, RMD partners with interior designers, architects, builders, and homeowners to transform spaces from concept to completion. Joining RMD means becoming part of a team that takes pride in setting the standard for luxury living.
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Artisan is where RMD's standard becomes something you can touch. Working in our Poolesville workroom, you build the custom window treatments, soft furnishings, and upholstery that carry our name into every client's home — turning premium materials, precise measurements, and exacting specifications into finished pieces that leave nothing to apologize for. This role begins as an Artisan Apprentice and moves through a structured, four-stage development path across your first year. You don't need prior workroom experience to start — you need a steady hand, real attention to detail, and the drive to learn a craft. What you build over that year is genuine skill: the technical ability, consistency, and judgment to eventually own complex custom work and help train the artisans who come after you. Every piece that leaves your table is measured against RMD's design, craftsmanship, and quality standards. The work is judged by what you produce, not the hours you put in — and doing it right the first time is the whole job.
WHO THRIVES HERE
You take pride in work done right — you'd rather redo a seam than let something leave the workroom that isn't up to standard. Precise, detailed work energizes you rather than wears you down. You have patience and a steady hand, and you can stay focused on getting the small things exactly right. You learn by doing and take coaching well — feedback is how you get better, not something to defend against. You keep your station clean and your process consistent, because you understand that good craftsmanship depends on both. You want to master a real trade, not just clock a shift — you're here to build a skill you can be proud of.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Craftsmanship & Production Produce custom window treatments, soft furnishings, and upholstery to RMD's specifications, meeting our design, craftsmanship, and quality standards on every build. Work accurately from measurements, cut sheets, and workroom instructions, checking your own work before it moves down the line. Meet the quality and productivity expectations for your stage, keeping rework to a minimum. Workroom & Team Follow established workroom processes and quality standards every time — consistency is what makes custom work repeatable. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, handling tools, materials, and finished goods with care. Collaborate with the Production Team Lead and fellow artisans, communicating clearly and early when something isn't right. Take feedback and coaching constructively — and apply it.
THE APPRENTICESHIP
HOW
YOU'LL GROW
This role is built to develop you. Over your first year you'll move through four stages, each expanding what you own in the workroom as you prove out skill, consistency, and judgment. Advancement is earned through demonstrated work — not assumed by the calendar — and it comes with real growth in responsibility and pay as you rise through it. Stage 1 — Artisan Apprentice (0-3 Months) Learn the basic tools, materials, and terminology of the workroom. Observe and assist experienced artisans, absorbing the RMD way of working. Complete simple tasks under direct supervision. Stage 2 — Developing Artisan (3-6 Months) Complete standard tasks with guidance. Begin producing simple components independently. Demonstrate a clear understanding of RMD's quality expectations. Stage 3 — Independent Artisan (6-12 Months) Produce full pieces independently, across window treatments, soft furnishings, and upholstery. Meet quality and productivity standards consistently. Require minimal rework. Stage 4 — Advanced Artisan (12+ Months) Handle complex and custom builds. Support the training and mentoring of apprentices. Contribute to continuous improvement in the workroom.
LEARN THE CRAFT, THEN BUILD ON IT
Every process and standard you'll be taught exists because of a real problem it was built to solve. A strong artisan doesn't shortcut a step before understanding what it protects — because the step that seems unnecessary is usually the one keeping a finished piece from failing in a client's home. Learn it, then run it. Your job in the early stages is to learn the RMD way as it stands — not just the steps, but the reasoning behind them — and to execute it faithfully, including the parts that feel heavier than they need to be. Then help improve it. Once you've earned it as an advanced artisan, your ideas for making the work better are not just welcome — they're expected. We built these processes to solve the problems we had; we don't assume they're the best possible answer forever.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Required A genuine interest in learning a hands-on craft. No prior workroom experience is required — the willingness and aptitude to learn matter more than a resume. Manual dexterity and the ability to do detailed, precise work for extended periods. Reliability and professionalism — you show up on time, ready to work, every day. The ability to take direction and coaching, and to apply feedback consistently. The physical ability to stand, sit, lift materials, and handle the day-to-day demands of workroom production. Preferred Hands-on experience in sewing, drapery, upholstery, tailoring, or a related trade. Prior experience in a production or workroom environment. Familiarity with the tools and materials used in custom soft goods and upholstery.
HOW SUCCESS IS MEASURED
The quality of your finished work. A consistent reduction in rework. Steady progression through the apprenticeship stages. Reliability and professionalism, day in and day out.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Hourly pay of $18
- 25 per hour, based on experience and performance.
This is a broad range by design: where you start reflects the skill and experience you bring, and your pay grows as you advance through the apprenticeship stages and consistently meet RMD's quality and productivity standards. This role is built to develop — in skill, in responsibility, and in pay — as you move from apprentice toward advanced artisan and take on more complex work. RMD offers a full benefits package, including paid time off, sick leave, paid holidays, a 401(k) plan, health benefits, and life insurance.
