Job Description
Job Summary Blackhorse Steel Works, LLC is seeking an experienced Quality Control Manager / Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to oversee and ensure compliance with AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) standards, AWS (American Welding Society) codes, and ASTM material specifications in our structural steel fabrication facility . The QC Manager / CWI will be responsible for inspecting welds, enforcing quality assurance processes, and maintaining documentation for AISC audits and client specifications . This role plays a critical part in ensuring the integrity and quality of all welded and fabricated components, minimizing defects, and improving welding procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Welding & Quality Control Inspections:
Conduct visual welding inspections (VT) and oversee non-destructive testing (NDT) processes such as Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Penetrant Testing (PT), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to ensure compliance with AWS D1.1 and D1.5 standards. Inspect and verify fit-up, joint preparation, weld size, and weld quality in accordance with AISC and project requirements. Review and approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ) . Ensure welders are properly qualified and certified , maintaining up-to-date records of their certifications.
AISC Quality Compliance & Documentation:
Implement and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS) per AISC certification requirements . Maintain and organize inspection records, welding logs, non-conformance reports (NCRs), and material traceability records . Conduct internal audits and assist in AISC certification audits to ensure compliance with industry standards. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to address welding and quality concerns.
Non-Conformance & Corrective Actions:
Identify, document, and resolve quality issues, defects, and deviations from project specifications. Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to minimize welding defects and fabrication errors. Work closely with production teams to troubleshoot welding issues and ensure process improvements.
Process Improvement & Training:
Train and mentor welders and fabricators on proper welding techniques, defect prevention, and AWS standards . Implement continuous improvement programs such as LEAN, Six Sigma, and 5S to enhance quality and efficiency . Keep up to date with new welding technologies, materials, and best practices to improve fabrication processes.
Safety & Compliance:
Enforce compliance with OSHA safety regulations and ensure all welding activities are performed safely. Ensure proper handling, storage, and usage of welding consumables, gases, and tools. Promote a safety-first culture among welders and production staff
