Help test the waters and protect Kauaʻi's reefs. Reef Guardians Hawaiʻi is seeking a part-time Water Quality Technician to support Kilo I Ke Kai - East Kauaʻi Water Testing Program and related community science initiatives. This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the protection of Hawaiʻi's reefs and watersheds by helping lead a community science water testing program that includes collecting stream and ocean water samples from multiple field sites, processing samples, leading and supervising volunteers, and entering data . This position may be particularly well suited to someone with laboratory or technical experience who enjoys working outdoors and would like to apply their skills to environmental conservation. Training will be provided for water-quality testing protocols, field procedures, laboratory processing, data entry, and program operations. Weekend availability is required approximately every three weeks, on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. It is a mission-driven role rooted in science, stewardship, and community participation. Primary Responsibilities Conduct water-quality field collection and laboratory sample processing activities Lead, train, and supervise community volunteers during field sampling and laboratory testing Maintain and prepare field and laboratory equipment Enter data and maintain monitoring records Prepare and organize field and laboratory supplies Follow established sampling, laboratory, and quality-assurance procedures Preferred Skills & Experience Laboratory or technical experience Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills Experience using Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Drive Ability to accurately enter, organize, and manage data Strong communication and teamwork skills Interest in environmental science, clean water, and conservation Helpful Experience Environmental fieldwork or water-quality testing Laboratory testing or scientific sample processing Participation in citizen science or community-based environmental programs Experience working with volunteers or staff Familiarity with Hawaiʻi's communities, culture, and environmental issues Current First Aid and CPR certification is a plus The Ideal Candidate Will Be Dependable and detail-oriented Comfortable working outdoors and in field settings Comfortable working in a laboratory Able to confidently lead, train, and work with volunteers Interested in science, environmental stewardship, and community-based conservation Able to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community participants Excited to contribute to clean water and healthy reefs on Kauaʻi Schedule Part-time position Weekend availability required approximately every three weeks on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon Work Environment Combination of laboratory, field, beach, stream, and community event settings Reliable transportation on Kauaʻi is required Physical Requirements Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions Ability to walk on uneven terrain and coastal environments Ability to lift and transport field equipment, program supplies, and educational materials Further Opportunities Depending on qualifications, experience, and program needs, additional responsibilities may include: Serving as an in-ocean guide for Reef Camp and youth environmental education programs Participating in public educational events and presentations Supporting community engagement and advocacy initiatives To Apply Please submit a resume and a cover letter describing your relevant experience and why you are interested in working with Reef Guardians Hawaiʻi.
