Operating Engineer / 1st Grade Stationary Engineer (2nd Shift) About the Role We are seeking an experienced Operating Engineer / Stationary Engineer to support the operation, maintenance, and reliability of a large facility's physical plant and related building systems. This is a great opportunity for a licensed engineer who enjoys working in a professional facilities environment, supporting critical building operations, and helping maintain a safe, comfortable, and well-functioning space for occupants and visitors. In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining plant equipment and building systems, while also assisting with general maintenance work when additional support is needed. The ideal candidate will be dependable, safety-minded, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working independently as well as part of a facilities team. Key Responsibilities Operate, monitor, and maintain physical plant equipment and related mechanical systems. Perform routine inspections of boilers, heating systems, cooling systems, pumps, motors, valves, and other facility equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation. Troubleshoot and complete maintenance and repairs involving electrical, plumbing, HVAC, heating, cooling, and general building systems. Monitor and respond to issues through computerized building automation systems. Support preventive maintenance efforts to reduce equipment downtime and improve long-term system reliability. Serve as a maintenance mechanic when supplemental staffing is needed, assisting with general facility repairs and maintenance tasks. Respond to service requests and facility concerns in a timely and professional manner. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment readings, inspections, and repairs. Follow all safety procedures, codes, and facility policies while performing assigned work. Communicate professionally with occupants, staff, vendors, and members of the public. Work independently with minimal supervision while remaining flexible to changing priorities, work locations, duties, hours, and shifts. Required Qualifications Maryland First Grade Stationary Engineer's License required. High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of two years of experience in electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling, general maintenance, and repair. Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling, and general building maintenance systems. Experience working with computerized building automation systems. Strong oral, written, and electronic communication skills. Ability to work safely, reliably, and independently with minimal supervision. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with internal teams, vendors, occupants, and the public. Flexibility regarding work location, duties, hours, and shifts. Preferred Qualifications Formal training or hands-on experience with building automation systems. Experience working in a campus, institutional, commercial, hospital, government, or large-facility environment. Experience with preventive maintenance programs and physical plant operations Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a licensed stationary engineer who takes pride in keeping facilities running safely and efficiently.
