Overview Join a high-stakes mission to re-shore precision miniature ball manufacturing as our Lead Cold Header Setup & Repair Specialist. We are seeking a mechanical expert to take full ownership of our Hartford cold heading and cropping equipment—managing everything from complex tooling changeovers to deep-cycle machine maintenance in a rigorous, precision-focused environment with finished product tolerances of +/- 0.000001 inches. As a critical member of this strategic initiative, you will play the lead role in maintaining production flow by preparing machines for new jobs, resolving complex equipment issues, and ensuring finished components meet exacting engineering specifications. This scope requires performing precise machine setups, tooling changes, and process adjustments to ensure real-time production quality standards are met. The ideal candidate will possess deep hands-on experience with cold heading equipment, a "fixer" mindset for mechanical troubleshooting, and a commitment to continuous improvement as we scale this specialized production capability. You will be responsible for ensuring material is processed with maximum efficiency while meeting the highest industry quality standards.
Responsibilities Precision Setup:
Perform complete machine setups and changeovers on Hartford cold heading and cropping equipment.
Tooling Mastery:
Install, align, and adjust complex tooling (including cutoff and die components); polish dies and perform precision grinding to achieve sub-micron accuracy.
System Optimization:
Configure wire feed systems, timing mechanisms, and forming stations for optimal production reliability.
Quality Control:
Conduct first-article inspections to verify concentricity and part quality; monitor machine output to maintain dimensional accuracy throughout production runs.
Technical Interpretation:
Interpret high-precision specifications, job instructions, and technical drawings to ensure proper machine configuration.
Mechanical Troubleshooting:
Rapidly diagnose and resolve machine issues such as misfeeds, alignment shifts, and tooling failures.
Maintenance & Repair:
Inspect tooling for wear and perform mechanical repairs or coordinate replacements to prevent downtime.
Precision Measurement:
Utilize advanced instruments, including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and optical measuring tools, to validate tolerances.
Documentation:
Record detailed setup parameters, inspection data, and production metrics to support traceability and process improvement.
Requirements Experience:
3-5 years of experience working with cold heading equipment or similar metal-forming machinery.
Technical Skills:
Proven experience performing machine setups and tooling changes in a high-precision manufacturing environment.
Aptitude:
Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities; ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Metrology:
Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
Communication:
Ability to follow written/verbal instructions and communicate effectively with team members and auditors.
