POSITION SUMMARY
Our Waco, TX facility manufactures aluminum ends/lids for beverage cans commonly used for soft drinks, beers, energy drinks, teas and non-carbonated beverages. Using state of the art end-making technology, this high-speed environment provides rewarding manufacturing opportunities. We are looking for a precision-focused Tool Room Machinist to execute the critical maintenance, repair, and modification of high-speed tooling used in our aluminum end manufacturing processes. Reporting to the Tool Room Coordinator, this hands-on role requires expert knowledge of tool and die principles, precision grinding, and the use of specialized machine shop equipment to ensure tooling meets extremely tight tolerances necessary for continuous, high-volume production.
Independently perform the machining, maintenance, repair, refurbishment, and adjustment of complex precision tooling components, including dies, punches, cut-edge tooling, and related components used in Shell Press and Conversion equipment. Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, mechanical drawings, engineering specifications, and other technical documentation to determine required dimensions, tolerances, materials, and machining requirements. Set up and operate manual Tool Room equipment, including: Manual lathes Knee and vertical mills Drill presses Surface grinders Tool and cutter grinders Saws Lapping and polishing equipment High-speed rotary tooling Other general precision machining equipment Determine the appropriate machine, cutting tools, work holding methods, speeds, feeds, and sequence of operations necessary to produce or repair components to specification. Efficiently set up and operate machining equipment to complete work safely, accurately, and within required production timelines. Machine, grind, lap, polish, and fit tooling components while maintaining required dimensional tolerances, including tolerances measured in ten-thousandths of an inch (0.0001"). Select appropriate tooling and machining methods based on material, geometry, finish, and tolerance requirements. Use appropriate hand tools to safely disassemble, inspect, clean, repair, and reassemble tooling and related assemblies. Follow and document the proper sequence of disassembly and reassembly, identifying wear points, damage, contamination, and other conditions that may affect tooling performance.
PRECISION MEASUREMENT & QUALITY VERIFICATION
Perform in-process and final dimensional inspections to verify that machined and repaired components meet required specifications and tolerances. Accurately use and read precision measuring and inspection equipment, including: Micrometers Dial and digital calipers Scales Gauge pins Bore gauges Height gauges Optical comparators Other precision measurement equipment as required Select the appropriate measuring device based on the tolerance, feature, and inspection requirement of the component. Verify dimensions, surface finishes, fits, and other critical characteristics before releasing tooling for production use. Identify components that do not meet specifications and determine appropriate corrective machining or repair actions. Document measurements, repairs, modifications, and adjustments in the designated tooling or maintenance tracking system.
TOOLING TROUBLESHOOTING & PRODUCTION SUPPORT
Troubleshoot tooling-related equipment and production issues and determine appropriate repair or corrective actions. Collaborate with Production, Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance personnel to diagnose tooling failures and minimize production downtime. Provide timely Tool Room support for production equipment, including tooling changes and repairs associated with Shell Press and Conversion machinery. Assist with the investigation of tooling-related quality concerns, including scoring, burrs, dimensional variation, uneven metal conditions, premature wear, and other defects. Provide technical input regarding tooling condition, machining requirements, repair methods, and opportunities to improve tooling reliability and performance. Perform preventative maintenance and routine inspections of tooling according to established schedules and Standard Work procedures. Identify abnormal wear, damage, or recurring tooling issues and communicate findings to the appropriate team members. Support continuous improvement efforts related to tooling life, machining processes, equipment reliability, quality, and production efficiency.
SAFETY, ORGANIZATION & HOUSEKEEPING
Operate all machining, grinding, cutting, and Tool Room equipment in accordance with established safety procedures and manufacturer requirements. Follow all company safety policies, including required PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe material-handling practices. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe Tool Room in accordance with 5S and established housekeeping standards. Properly handle, protect, label, and store precision tooling, measuring instruments, fixtures, and components to prevent damage, contamination, corrosion, or degradation. Inspect machines, tools, and equipment before use and promptly report unsafe conditions or equipment requiring repair. Maintain machining equipment, work areas, and measuring instruments in proper working condition. Perform all work with a strong focus on safety, precision, quality, and minimizing production downtime.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain accurate records of completed machining, repairs, inspections, and tooling activities. Communicate tooling status, repair needs, and potential production concerns to leadership and affected departments. Prioritize work based on production requirements, tooling condition, safety, and operational urgency. Work independently while effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams. Perform other Tool Room and machining duties as assigned to support plant operations.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED High school diploma or GED equivalent. Proficient in operating manual Tool Room machinery, including surface grinders, lathes, milling machines, and specialized lapping/polishing equipment. Ability to read and interpret complex blue print and technical assembly drawings Experience using precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers). Must be able to obtain a forklift operator certification (internal). Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work across all shifts in a 24/7/365 operational environment. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods (up to 12 hours). Willingness to work any shift in a 24/7/365 continuous manufacturing environment.
PREFERRED A
Technical degree or the equivalent experience, defined as greater than 4 years of experience in a technical manufacturing environment. Prior experience in metal forming, packaging, or high-volume consumer goods (FMCG). Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment, ideally within the aluminum can industry. 3+ years of practical, hands-on experience as a Tool & Die Maker, Machinist, or Precision Tooling Technician, in high-speed automated machinery, preferably in metal forming, packaging, or can manufacturing industry. GENERAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
Understanding manufacturing processes. Prefer data collection and analysis experience in a high-volume automated manufacturing environment. Understanding engineering, scientific and other technical information. Experience of New Product Introduction, reworking design changes and upgrades through to production. Ability to understand and interpret technical manuals, 2D drawings, P&IDs, fluid and electrical schematics and other engineering documentation. Proven understanding of BOMs, manufacturability, process design, process validation, assembly methods, design reviews and cost reduction methodologies. Innovative leader with the ability to identify opportunities and influence organizations to gain support and overcome resistance with data and persuasion. Ability to develop manufacturing documentation. Capable of identifying critical process parameters and applying statistics to process measurement and control. Development and qualification of tooling/equipment skills. Strong organizational skills and proven ability to maintain accurate, detailed records that will be audited periodically. Excellent communication and negotiation skills for relaying data (verbally and in-writing) between other employees and clients. Ability to work on multiple projects at once with tight deadlines. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Must be able to identify and execute improvement opportunities through both process improvements and system improvements. Ability to take ownership and responsibility with little direction. Ability to be pragmatic in decision making; requires high integrity. Ability to effectively train people inside and outside their work group. Preference will be given to qualified local candidates.
SOFTWARE/COMPUTER SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS
