Job Description

The City of Hitchcock, a Home Rule City located in Galveston County, seeks an experienced wastewater treatment plant operator. Hitchcock has a population of 7,900 residents spread over 71 square miles and is conveniently located between the City of Houston and the Island of Galveston on the Texas Gulf Coast. JOB SUMMARY

: The overall purpose and general responsibilities of the job. This position is to ensure the proper operation of the wastewater treatment plant. This is accomplished by running lab tests, process control tests, monitoring and maintaining equipment, inspecting lift stations, cleaning clarifiers, disposing of sludge, mowing around the plant and lift stations, and collecting data and samples, in compliance with TCEQ guidelines.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The fundamental duties and tasks that define the job. (The following examples are intended to be illustrative and are not intended to be all-inclusive.) 1. Operates and maintains process equipment. 2. Checks motors, pumps, generators, settling tanks, filters, chemical feed systems, and other equipment. 3. Records readings and changes charts. 4. Collects, preserves, and maintains the chain of custody for laboratory samples. 5. Collects, records, and prepares operating data to be used for the completion of operating records for submission to regulatory agencies. 6. Performs basic process control measurements, testing of DO, PH, and residual chlorine analysis. 7. Lubricates, dismantles, cleans, and assembles parts and equipment. 8. Troubleshoots and performs preventative maintenance on various pumps, piping, and valves. 9. Interprets lab results and makes adjustments to the plant process to optimize plant efficiency. 10. Trains and mentors new and less experienced employees. 11. Performs related duties as needed.

Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum requirements for formal education and job-related experience. Graduation from high school or GED, with five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation and maintenance of water systems and wastewater treatment plants; must hold a valid Class B Wastewater License; or an equivalent combination of education and/or related experience. Must hold a valid Texas Class C commercial driver s license with an acceptable driving record.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

Utilized in the performance of the essential functions of the job. Knowledge of activated sludge and wastewater treatment. Knowledge of and ability to handle dangerous chemicals, such as chlorine and sulfur dioxide. Proficient in the use of materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in a construction environment. Ability to understand written and oral instructions. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents, instruction manuals, policies, and procedures. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports. Ability to work effectively and efficiently under sometimes stressful conditions. Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job.

License and Certification:

Valid Class B Wastewater License from TCEQ. (Preferred)

Valid Class C Wastewater License from TCEQ.

Valid Texas Class C Commercial Driver s License with acceptable driving record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements associated with the performance of Essential Job Functions. Physical requirements include carrying/lifting 40 lbs. and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 lbs.; visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate small hand tools and construction equipment; subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform essential job functions.
