Position Title:
Telecommunications Officer.
Department:

Schedule:
Must be able to work any shift, including holidays and weekends; 12-hour shifts or longer. The Telecommunications Officer answers multi-line telephones, including E911, and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls. Dispatches Police, Fire, EMS, Animal Control, and other essential services. Performs accurate data entry, monitors radio traffic, and communicates effectively to protect officer and public safety.
Essential Job Functions:
Answer multi-line telephones, including E911 calls. Communicate clearly, courteously, and promptly in English (verbal and written). Listen and comprehend telephone and radio traffic. Record requests for Police, Fire, and EMS from public and department personnel. Understand and apply City ordinances, policies, and procedures. Document activity, locations, and status in Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD). Operate computer terminals with access to specialized automated databases. Work in a confined area for 12+ hours, seated for long periods while entering data. Input, retrieve, and maintain information using monitors and printouts. Operate multi-channel radio systems. Assign appropriate police personnel for routine and emergency calls. Operate equipment in low-light conditions, discerning distinct CAD system colors. Maintain concentration on multiple tasks amid distractions. Perform daily maintenance on communication equipment. Assist in training new employees. Attend and testify in criminal and civil court when summoned. Attend training schools, seminars, and City events (occasional overnight travel). Maintain regular, consistent attendance. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements to
Perform Work:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Six (6) months of experience, or equivalent training/education/experience. Must have or be able to obtain a Basic Telecommunications Certificate within one year of hire. Valid Texas Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:
Police, fire, and EMS emergency response practices. Methods for responding/dispatching emergency services. Computers, hardware/software, and informational databases.
Skills:
Effective verbal and written communication. Organizational methods and procedures. Time management and resource utilization. Proficiency with computers and dispatching applications.
Abilities:
Work scheduled days off and during emergencies. Work overtime as needed. Remain calm and use sound judgment under high stress. Be assertive and calm when gathering information from distressed callers. Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance. Quickly assimilate information and take appropriate action. Work independently with minimal supervision. Research, compile, summarize information and data. Work effectively with employees, management, and citizens.
Physical Demands:
Sedentary to light work; exert up to 30 lbs occasionally. Must be able to lift 30 lbs. Long periods of sitting. Climbing and stretching for cleaning/inspection tasks. Frequent typing, data entry, and extended monitor viewing. Exposure to irate individuals, emergencies, high-stress situations.
Work Environment:
Normal office environment. Requires standard safety precautions. Exposure to everyday risks typical of office settings. Must adhere to fire/building safety rules and traffic laws when driving.

Retirement & Savings (TMRS): 7% employee contribution (taxdeferred). City matches 2-to-1. Fully vested after 5 years.
Eligibility:
