Job Description

Position Summary The Director of Communications and Development advances the mission of Pleasant View, Inc. through communications, grant writing, donor engagement, volunteer coordination, and community outreach. Rooted in Pleasant View's Anabaptist Christian heritage, this position is responsible for sharing the organization's story, strengthening relationships with supporters, increasing community awareness, and securing grant funding that supports programs and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Working closely with the CEO, staff, volunteers, churches, donors, and community partners, the Director develops communication strategies, coordinates fundraising initiatives, manages grant activities, and creates opportunities for community engagement that advance Pleasant View's mission throughout Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and the Shenandoah Valley. This position serves as the organization's primary grant writer and communications leader while supporting donor stewardship, volunteer engagement, and community partnerships. Key Responsibilities Leadership and Strategic Planning Partner with the CEO to support organizational fundraising, communications, volunteer engagement, and community outreach goals. Develop annual communications, marketing, volunteer engagement, and grant development plans. Provide regular reports regarding grant activity, donor engagement, communication performance, and volunteer participation. Foster a culture of philanthropy, stewardship, volunteerism, and mission-centered storytelling throughout the organization. Champion Pleasant View's faith-based mission and values in communications and community engagement efforts. Support partnerships with congregations, faith communities, and community organizations throughout the Shenandoah Valley. Fundraising, Grant Writing, and Development Support organizational fundraising efforts through grant writing, annual giving activities, donor communications, stewardship initiatives, and special events. Serve as the primary grant writer for the organization, leading grant research, proposal development, submission, reporting, and compliance activities. Develop compelling grant narratives that communicate Pleasant View's mission, faith-based values, program outcomes, and community impact. Maintain a comprehensive grants calendar and funding pipeline. Collaborate with the CEO, program leaders, and finance staff to gather data and prepare grant proposals and reports. Assist the CEO with donor stewardship activities and donor communications. Help coordinate annual fundraising campaigns and special events. Cultivate relationships with foundations, churches, community organizations, corporations, and funding partners. Identify new funding opportunities that support organizational growth and sustainability. Track grant performance and funding outcomes to support future funding opportunities. Communications and Marketing Develop and implement annual communications and marketing plans that increase awareness of Pleasant View's mission and impact. Manage the organization's website, social media channels, email marketing, and digital communications. Oversee organizational branding, messaging, and visual identity. Create compelling content for newsletters, annual reports, fundraising appeals, donor communications, social media, videos, and promotional materials. Ensure messaging consistently communicates the experiences, achievements, and impact of individuals supported by Pleasant View. Share authentic stories that highlight inclusion, belonging, faith, dignity, independence, and community participation. Cultivate positive relationships with local media and community organizations. Coordinate communication efforts that support fundraising, volunteer engagement, and community outreach objectives. Monitor communication metrics and analytics to improve effectiveness and engagement. Community, Volunteer, and Stakeholder Engagement Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, businesses, churches, civic organizations, schools, colleges, advocacy groups, and partner organizations. Represent Pleasant View at community events, church gatherings, networking opportunities, speaking engagements, and donor meetings. Develop and implement a volunteer engagement strategy that supports organizational priorities and strengthens community involvement. Coordinate volunteer recruitment, placement, orientation, training, scheduling, and recognition activities. Collaborate with program staff to identify meaningful volunteer opportunities that support individuals served by Pleasant View. Develop relationships with churches, educational institutions, businesses, and civic organizations to expand volunteer participation. Coordinate volunteer opportunities for special events, fundraising activities, community service projects, and mission-related programs. Create volunteer appreciation and recognition initiatives that encourage long-term engagement. Support Board engagement activities and provide resources to help Board members serve as ambassadors, advocates, and volunteer recruiters. Promote opportunities for community members to support Pleasant View through volunteering, giving, and advocacy. Operations and Administration Manage donor, grant, volunteer, and communication databases and reporting systems. Maintain accurate records related to grants, donors, volunteers, and outreach efforts. Oversee volunteer tracking, communications, and engagement systems. Monitor communication, fundraising, grant, and volunteer metrics. Ensure compliance with grant requirements and organizational policies. Coordinate external vendors and communication resources as needed. Assist with planning and implementation of fundraising and community engagement events. Collaborate across departments to advance organizational goals and mission impact. Qualifications Required Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Nonprofit Management, English, Business Administration, or a related field. Minimum of three to five years of experience in communications, grant writing, nonprofit development, fundraising, volunteer management, or related fields. Demonstrated success in grant writing and grant management. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines. Experience building relationships with donors, volunteers, churches, community partners, and organizational leaders. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and donor database or CRM systems. Commitment to mission-driven work and serving diverse populations. Preferred Qualifications Experience working within a faith-based nonprofit organization or ministry. Experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities or related populations. Experience coordinating volunteers and community outreach initiatives. Experience managing social media, website content, and donor communications. Familiarity with donor CRM systems, grant management software, and digital marketing tools. Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential or progress toward certification. Ability to communicate the intersection of faith, belonging, inclusion, and disability services to a variety of audiences. Excellent writing, editing, storytelling, and communications skills. Strong grant writing, proposal development, and grant management abilities. Ability to translate program outcomes, organizational priorities, and impact data into compelling funding requests. Experience recruiting, coordinating, training, and engaging volunteers. Knowledge of volunteer engagement best practices and volunteer recognition strategies. Ability to build meaningful relationships with churches, community organizations, educational institutions, donors, and volunteer leaders. Strong organizational, project management, and time management skills. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments. Proficiency in public speaking and presentation development. Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail. High degree of professionalism, integrity, discretion, and confidentiality. Key Performance Indicators Annual grant revenue secured. Number and quality of grant proposals submitted. Timely completion and compliance of grant reporting requirements. Growth in donor engagement and annual giving participation. Growth in volunteer recruitment, retention, and annual volunteer service hours. Expansion of church, community, and organizational partnerships. Growth in website traffic, email engagement, newsletter readership, and social media engagement. Successful execution of special events, volunteer initiatives, and community engagement activities. Increased public awareness of Pleasant View's mission, programs, and services. Positive relationships with donors, churches, volunteers, and community stakeholders.
