Job Description
The Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library (Heights Libraries) is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Communications Specialist to support the library's communications, marketing, and engagement efforts. Working under the direction of the Communications Manager, this position serves as the primary editor for public-facing library communications. The Communications Specialist develops, edits, publishes, and maintains quality content across the library's website, email marketing platforms, print materials, and event communications systems. This role ensures consistency of messaging, adherence to communications standards, and effective promotion of library programs, services, and initiatives. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and editor who enjoys organizing information, maintaining high editorial standards, and translating complex information into clear, engaging, and accessible communications. Key Responsibilities Editorial Management Review, edit, and route communications submissions from staff in accordance with established communications standards and workflows. Ensure all written communications reflect accurate information and follow best practices for accessibility, readability, and audience engagement. Assist the Graphic Designer in maintaining an up-to-date library of brochures, handouts, publications, and other print materials. Support the development of new promotional and informational materials. Event Communications Review, edit, and publish program listings through the library's online events system. Collaborate with the Graphic Designer to determine which promotional materials or methods are needed for each program. Create and manage automated communications for program attendees, including confirmations, reminders, and follow-up messages. Prepare and format quarterly program content for publication in Check Us Out and other promotional materials. Website Content Management Develop, publish, and maintain accurate, user-friendly, relevant website content. Create and maintain online forms and associated email communications. Collaborate with the Social Media and Content Specialist to add visual content to website. Monitor and report on website traffic and performance metrics using tools such as Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager. Email Marketing Develop and distribute e-newsletters and promotional email campaigns. Utilize audience segmentation, subscriber lists, tags, and related email marketing tools. Create and maintain automated cardholder engagement campaigns. Monitor email performance metrics and recommend improvements. Additional Responsibilities Collaborate with the Communications Department to support library-wide marketing and communications initiatives. Develop messaging, press releases, staff talking points, announcements, and other written content to support special initiatives and campaigns. Stay current on best practices in library communications and cardholder engagement. Perform other communications-related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Creative Writing, or related field preferred. Experience Minimum of two years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, content management, journalism, or related field. Experience collaborating with multiple contributors to create and edit written content across multiple communication channels. Experience working in libraries, nonprofits, educational institutions, government agencies, or other mission-driven organizations preferred. Skills and Competencies Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills. Strong editorial judgment and rigorous attention to detail. Ability to maintain and enforce communications standards and style guidelines. Strong organizational and project management skills. Experience using website content management systems, email marketing platforms, and audience management tools. Familiarity with search engine optimization (SEO) and digital content best practices. Ability to interpret communications data and use metrics to improve outcomes. Familiarity with accessible and inclusive communication practices. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively across departments. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Work Environment and Schedule Primarily based at the Lee Road Branch, with occasional travel to other branches. Part-time schedule of approximately 20 hours per week. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required to support communication initiatives and special events. Position requires extensive computer use and regular work within content management, email marketing, and analytics platforms. Compensation Starting pay is $18.20 per hour, commensurate with skills, experience, and qualifications within the established pay range.
