Communication Specialist-Assistive Technology

Job Description

Job Summary Comprehensive Therapy Group is seeking Communication Specialists to assess the ways in which individuals communicate, write communication action plans for staff/families to follow, create communication tools and tips sheets, make recommendations, updates, or additions if a communication device is already in use, offer ongoing supports to navigate challenges, and train team members. The Communication Specialist is primarily responsible for direct implementation of skill-acquisition of communication systems or devices and data collection within an already existing communication plan. The Communication Specialist will instruct, educate and train those with IDD/Autism, staff, other professionals and team members as it relates to assistive technology and the implementation of communication systems and devices. The Communication Specialist will work directly with individuals with IDD/Autism through training, support, device maintenance and the procurement of assistive technology devices. The Communication Specialist should be competent in assistive technology including computer access, technology applications for communication, PECS, electronic aids for daily living, and alternative communication systems. The Communication Specialist provides a caring, supportive and safe environment through observation, attending to individual needs, respecting differences and supporting growth and independence. The Communication Specialist provides comprehensive information to the team about each assigned individual through the assessment process. Offers well thought out, enhancing goal ideas. Reliable transportation required.
Responsibilities:
Complete assessments, develop communication action plans with interventions using creativity and best practices. Train staff on how to implement the CAP and work directly with the individual to enhance communication with staff, family, and community members. Manage caseload and schedule according to frequency listed in the ISP. Experience Bachelor's degree required in communication disorders, speech and language pathology, special education, or similar degree program. Experience in assistive technology, communication disorders, sign language, education of deaf students, or similar required. Experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders required.
