Dance Instructor and Choreographer Betty Gray Middle School Mableton, GA Job Details Part-time | Seasonal | Contract From $45 an hour 17 hours ago Benefits Flexible schedule Qualifications Dance coaching experience Bachelor's degree in theatre Teaching arts Directing dance projects Choreography Full Job Description We are seeking an energetic, creative, patient, and encouraging Dance Instructor/Choreographer to work with middle school students in preparation for upcoming performances and our Spring Musical. Our students are enthusiastic performers who love music and love to move, but many have little or no formal dance training. The ideal instructor will understand how to create exciting, age-appropriate choreography that helps students look polished and confident while meeting them at their individual skill levels. Position Responsibilities The Dance Instructor/Choreographer will: Teach choreography to middle school students in grades 6-8. Create fun, engaging, age-appropriate choreography for musical numbers and performance selections. Work successfully with non-trained and beginning dancers. Break choreography into manageable steps that students can learn, remember, and perform confidently. Incorporate movement that highlights students' strengths without requiring advanced dance technique. Teach proper warm-ups, stretching, stage movement, rhythm, coordination, and basic dance technique. Help students develop confidence, stage presence, musicality, teamwork, and performance skills. Differentiate choreography when necessary so students with varying movement abilities can participate successfully. Collaborate with the Choral Director/Musical Director to ensure choreography supports the music, staging, characters, and overall vision of each performance. Assist with cleaning and polishing choreography as performances approach. Maintain a positive, structured rehearsal environment appropriate for middle school students. Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who: Enjoys working with middle school students. Is patient with students who may need movement demonstrated or reviewed several times. Can make beginning dancers feel successful rather than intimidated. Brings high energy and enthusiasm to rehearsals. Understands that performance quality and confidence are more important than overly complicated choreography. Can create choreography for large groups and featured performers. Is comfortable working with students who have different levels of coordination, flexibility, confidence, and dance experience. Can teach choreography using counts, music cues, repetition, and visual demonstrations. Encourages students while also holding them accountable for learning and performing choreography. Is dependable, punctual, organized, and prepared for rehearsals. Can collaborate professionally with school staff and production team members. Preferred Experience Previous experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: Musical Theatre Hip-Hop Jazz Contemporary Show Choir Step Commercial Dance School Productions Youth Dance Experience working with children, teenagers, school performing arts programs, community theatre, dance studios, or youth organizations is strongly preferred. Formal professional dance credentials are welcomed; however, the ability to connect with students, teach movement effectively, and create achievable choreography for developing performers is especially important. Our Students Our students may not consider themselves "dancers"—and that is perfectly okay. We are looking for an instructor who can take a group of students who love to move, perform, sing, and have fun and help transform that enthusiasm into a confident, exciting stage performance. The goal is not to turn every student into a technically trained dancer. The goal is to help every student move with purpose, perform with confidence, work as an ensemble, and feel successful on stage. Availability The instructor must be available for scheduled rehearsals leading up to upcoming performances and the Spring Musical. Some rehearsals may occur after school, with additional rehearsals scheduled as the performance approaches. Specific rehearsal dates, performance dates, compensation, and production expectations will be discussed with selected candidates. What We Are Looking For Most Patience. Creativity. Energy. Encouragement. Strong classroom management. And the ability to make non-dancers look and feel like performers.
