Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Composer to create an original score for The Welcoming, a suspense/psychological thriller short film intended for film festival submission and potential distribution. Picture editing is currently being completed, and we are hiring now so the composer can begin promptly once picture is locked. The Welcoming begins as a beautiful late-1990s weekend getaway among a group of young friends before gradually becoming more mysterious, unsettling and dangerous. We want the score to support that progression rather than immediately signal to the audience that they are watching a horror film. We are looking for music that feels cinematic, emotional, atmospheric and sophisticated. The beginning of the film should have room for beauty, youthfulness and warmth, while the score gradually evolves toward unease, tension and psychological darkness as the story unfolds. We especially value restraint and strong storytelling instincts—someone who understands when music should carry emotion, when it should subtly create tension, and when silence or sound design may be more powerful than score. The film has a lush, slightly dreamlike and cinematic visual quality, and we want the music to complement that atmosphere while developing its own memorable identity. We are open to creative instrumentation and want to collaborate with the selected composer on musical references and direction after viewing the locked film. The composer will coordinate with our Sound Designer/Re-Recording Mixer, who will incorporate the completed score into the final sound mix. $3,000 flat project rate. Includes two reasonable rounds of revisions. The rate includes composition and production of the original score, final mastered music cues, and delivery of appropriate music stems for the final mix. Please submit a scoring reel and/or examples of narrative films you have personally scored. Work demonstrating emotional storytelling, atmosphere, suspense and psychological tension is especially welcome.
