Job Description A member of the professional staff expected to participate in the "team ministry" concept in order to provide the best possible leadership of the music ministry. This concept of ministry means that each person will serve as a complement to others so as to provide coordinated and responsible leadership in a Christian spirit. Responsible for both the Chancel and Children's Choir. Will plan and direct, with the minister's approval, the overall music ministry of these groups. Work with the pastor to enhance the theme of sermons and funerals. Approve all vocals, solos, and other music provided at the 10:00 AM worship service. Coordinate with the minister, as requested, for funerals. Assist in special music efforts by groups within the church. Maintain church music and provide for the choir as needed (keeping within the yearly budget). Submit annual budget requests for needed music and buy within the budget required for both the Chancel and Children's Choir. Work with the minister to select varied music and anthems. Keep basic records of choir members, music usage, and supply promotional information to the church office and other media. Recruit new members and oversee the work of, and encourage, the musical talent within the church. Promote quality selections of music, provide hymns each week at choir rehearsal, and practice selections prior to service. With the minister's approval, present two special musical works each year by the Chancel choir (Easter and Christmas) and at least one special musical program with the Children's choir. Provide music for the 10:00 AM Sunday service, revivals, funerals, and scheduled church events. Qualifications Be a person of good moral character, congenial and willing to cooperate with those whom responsible, co-workers, church members, and the general public. Be a person who easily meets and interacts with people of all ages and temperaments. Must be at least 18 years of age, resourceful, creative, dependable, and able to work effectively with a minimum amount of supervision. Have the necessary skills to teach selected music to both trained and untrained voices of the Chancel and Children's choir and direct choral groups. Salary Salary will be determined based upon job skills and experience. Work Schedule All choir practice will be scheduled by the Music Director (generally from 6:00 PM to 6:50 PM on Wednesdays). The Music Director is given two Sundays and two Wednesdays off per year with pay. Additional time off, without pay, must be approved by Staff Parrish Relation (SPR). However, approved special music should be arranged for scheduled absences. (
Note:
traditionally the choir takes a four-week summer recess.) The Music Director should attend staff meetings required by the minister. Authority The Music Director is a lay employee of the church working in a salaried employee status and therefore approved for employment by the SPR. The Music Director is responsible to the SPR to discharge duties assigned. Employment relations, special problems, or questions concerning employment and compensation shall be under the authority of the SPR. This position shall be reviewed annually with the employee, minister, and SPR. At Will Employment Employment and compensation with First Methodist Church are "at will" in that they can be terminated with or without cause, and with or without notice, at any time, at the option of either First Methodist Church or yourself, except as otherwise provided by law. Background checks are required based on the Safe Sanctuary Policy of First Methodist Church.
