Job Description

Position Objective and Summary Objective:
The Organist supports the Church's Music Ministry by providing organ music as part of the worship experience
Summary:
This position provides organ music during worship services and serves as accompanist for the Chancel Choir. The instrument at Wesley Church is an Austin pipe organ, installed in 1991, featuring 3,864 pipes in 65 ranks with 4 manuals in 7 divisions. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Work with the Director of Music and the Directing Pastor to coordinate the organ music for worship services. This includes research, selection, practice, and performance of music selections appropriate for the preludes, offertories, interludes, communion, hymns and postludes. 2. Accompany the Chancel Choir at rehearsals Wednesday evenings from 6:45-8:00pm and Sunday mornings at the traditional 9:00am worship service. 3. Attend the weekly worship planning meeting with the worship staff on Tuesdays at 10:00am. 4. Be available to accompany and support soloists and instrumentalists during rehearsal and worship as needed, and substitute for, other music ensembles on an occasional basis. 5. Arrange for a substitute organist when not available in conjunction with the Director of Music. 6. Identify and communicate problems with the organ to the Director of Music and work with the organ technician to tune and maintain the organ. 7. The right of first refusal for special services, weddings, and funerals at the Church at various times throughout the year as stipulated at time of hire. (Not included in the salary. A flat rate of $250 is charged per service for weddings and funerals. Payment is given by the families requesting the service and handled through the church office when arrangements are being made.) Perform other duties as may become necessary in the ministry team of the Church and assigned by the Director of Music or Staff Parish Relations Committee.
Education Level:
Bachelor's or Master's Music degree in organ performance (preferred)
Essential:
  • Advanced organ proficiency and well-developed organ technique.
  • High degree of musical knowledge and ability.
  • Strong sight-reading and improvisational skills.
  • Excellent accompanying skills.
  • The Symphony No.
5 in F minor, V. Toccata (Widor) and Handel's The Hallelujah Chorus are annual traditions at our Easter worship service.

Proficient use of computer for emailing, scheduling and other responsibilities
Pay:
$23,400.00 - $31,200.00 per year
