Job Description

First Presbyterian Church, McMinnville, Oregon
POSITION DESCRIPTION SERVICE ACCOMPANIST DUTIES
First Presbyterian Church seeks an instrumental musician (piano and/or organ) to provide leadership in weekly service playing. This includes congregational hymn accompaniment, introits, postludes, offertories, accompaniment of chancel choir, supporting the praise team, and accompaniment for special services approved by the church's Session (governing board). Accompanying the chancel choir includes weekly evening rehearsals. Playing for special services—e.g. weddings, funerals, and memorial services—will be compensated separately by those requesting such services.
SUPERVISION
The Service Accompanist reports to the Pastor under the direction of the Director of Music. She/he is accountable to the Session (governing body) via the Personnel Committee.
COLLABORATION
Under PC(USA) regulations, the Minister of Word and Sacrament (Pastor) has ultimate authority for the selection of hymns for worship services. However, informally, this is a collaborative choice involving the Pastor, Director of Music, and Service Accompanist.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Service Accompanist will provide evidence of
  • Instrumental proficiency consistent with a congregation that values music as a vital part of Christian worship,
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with the Pastor and Director of Music to consider how music is a vehicle for parishioners to deepen their relationship with the Divine, and
  • Openness to the religious and cultural diversity that enriches a community of faith rooted in the Christian and Reformed tradition that is God-seeking, loving, open, and courageous.
IN ADDITION
Each staff member of First Presbyterian Church is required to submit to a background check annually.
COMPENSATION
The role of Service Accompanist involves a mix of musical performance, rehearsal, personal musical practice, and collaboration. In order to balance these diverse roles, while providing a regular and predictable income to the position holder, First Presbyterian Church will work with the position holder to provide compensation of $200 weekly (equivalent to $10,400 annually) for position holders with piano proficiency only, up to $240 weekly (equivalent to $12,480 annually) for position holder with both piano and organ proficiency. Weekly compensation may reflect a mix of service playing, accompaniment, rehearsal, and preparation, and will include two paid Sundays of personal leave per year, at times agreed to by the Director of Music and Pastor, at two weeks of compensation per Sunday.
