Job Description

Employment Type:

•30/hour (based on experience) About St. John's Lutheran Church St. John's Lutheran is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and was founded in 1902 when the church was first organized in downtown Spartanburg, SC. It moved to its present location at 415 S. Pine Street in 1949. We currently offer two distinct worship services each Sunday, with the 9:00 am worship being lead in a contemporary style and the 11:00 am worship being traditional and liturgical. As a community of faith we seek to live out our mission statement: "Called through our baptism in Christ and forgiven by God's grace we are empowered by the Holy Spirit and sent to minister with love to the world." Key Responsibilities The Church Choir Accompanist will provide instrumental support (keyboard/piano/organ) for most traditional worship services, choir rehearsals, and special events, working directly with the Director of Worship and Music. The Accompanist will require strong sight reading music, versatility across styles (traditional and contemporary), and good communication skills to support the church's overall music ministry. Key duties involve accompaniment, rehearsal support, and music preparation.

Worship Services:

Provide accompaniment for chancel choir or other special ensembles during regular traditional Sunday services and special liturgical events (Christmas, Easter, Lent). Currently for an 11:00 am worship service on Sundays; call time 10:15 am. Occasions may arise when the accompanist may be asked to play a component of the liturgy to assist with the flow of the worship service.

Rehearsals:

Support chancel choir and ensemble rehearsals, helping with tempo, parts, and musicality. Currently Wednesdays from 6:45 pm to 8:00 pm. Compensation may include 1

•1 ½ hours of personal rehearsal time as needed.

Music Selection:

Assist the Director of Worship and Music as needed for music selection.

Collaboration:

Work closely with the Director of Worship and Music, pastors, and other church staff as a team player.

Instrumental Versatility:

Be proficient on piano/keyboard and potentially organ, adapting to different instruments as needed.

Essential Skills & Qualifications Musical Proficiency:

Excellent sight-reading (music, chord charts, lead sheets), strong keyboard skills, ability to follow a conductor.

Versatility:

Experience with diverse styles, from traditional hymns to contemporary worship music.

Interpersonal Skills:

Friendly, clear communication with staff, choir, and congregation.

Professionalism:

Reliable, prepared, and able to find qualified substitutes. Reporting & Hours Reports to the Director of Worship and Music. Contracted, Part-time, with hours varying but including regular weekend services and weekday rehearsals from September through May/early June (the chancel choir season ends each year on Trinity Sunday). There are times throughout the year when the regular worship service schedule is adjusted for special events, and these will be discussed well in advance with duties for those days agreed to by the accompanist and Director of Worship and Music.
