Seattle, WA, United States The Accelerator is the Gates Foundation's technology innovation team, conceiving, designing, testing, and preparing the ecosystem for fundamentally novel platform technologies with breakthrough potential in service of the foundation's global health mission. Through its Activator unit, the team explores and funds early-stage efforts for proof-of-concept and works to activate private-sector entities to carry promising technologies forward. Current frontiers span curative, gene-based interventions for diseases like HIV and sickle cell disease, AI-enabled drug discovery, and strategic partnerships. The Director, Accelerator leads this team, setting strategic bets on which novel platforms are worth pursuing, running the Activator unit's sourcing and funding of early-stage concepts, building and leading a high-performing entrepreneurial team, cultivating relationships across biotech, pharma, academia, and venture capital, and stewarding governance through quarterly reviews and leadership communication.
Requirements:
An M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent experience in a relevant life sciences or biomedical discipline; a track record as a serial entrepreneur or venture builder who has founded or led biotech or health-technology companies from concept through proof-of-concept or clinical validation; direct experience evaluating early-stage science as an investor or venture partner; deep technical fluency in breakthrough platform areas relevant to global health; experience building and leading high-performing technical teams; and strong relationship-building and communication skills.
