Southern California | Outside Sales | Black Box Safety, Inc. | Live in East County / El Cajon | Full-time Base $70,000-$90,000 plus uncapped commission. On-target earnings $130,000-$160,000. About Us Black Box Safety is a veteran-owned distributor of safety products, PPE, and MRO supplies. We sell to public agencies, utilities, and contractors who keep people safe at work. Jackson Dalton, a medically retired Marine, founded the company in 2017. Headquarters is in El Cajon, California. We are a small, growing company. You will have a real book, a short line to leadership, and the contract paths government and contractor buyers already use. You will not be the eleventh rep on the same accounts. The Role This is an outside sales job. You will own a Southern California territory of industrial, facilities, utility, government, and contractor accounts. You develop the relationships, grow profitable revenue, and stay on the account after the first order — especially replenishment. You will be in the market about four days a week: yards, warehouses, facilities shops, and job sites. You live in East County / El Cajon so the core of the book is a short drive. Occasional overnight travel inside Southern California. You partner with inside sales and operations on quotes, orders, and delivery. Compensation is tied to sales results and to the account work below. Why This Role Exists We already ship into this geography. What we have not had is one person whose job is industrial and facilities buyers — plus federal and contractor work from the same headquarters. Law enforcement and California state agencies sit with other teammates. This seat is the industrial book. A Week in This Job Read this section before you apply. If it sounds like the boring part of sales, this is not your seat. If it sounds like the part of sales that actually pays, keep reading.
Monday:
Set the week's route. Two storeroom walks already on the calendar, one purchasing desk that owes you a PO, and two facilities shops that have never heard of us — plus the name of the person at each one who can let you in. Tuesday through
Thursday:
In the field. A warehouse walk where you spot the empty shelf before the storekeeper mentions it. A cold stop at a contractor's job-site trailer. A follow-up at an account whose first order shipped last month, because the reorder is the whole game in this business.
Quotes:
Go out the same week, on the right buying path — cooperative, GSA, open market, or small-business set-aside — with inside support handling the paperwork so you stay on the road.
Friday:
CRM current, next actions written, and field intel back to leadership: who else is on the account, when the contract renews, which prime just won work nearby. Nobody hands you a queue. Replenishment is not the consolation prize here — it is the compounding asset. Every storeroom you get on a cadence is commission that shows up again next month without a new pitch. What You Will Do Call on assigned and prospective accounts to grow revenue, keep the business, and win the next reorder.
Build a territory plan:
who you see, in what order, and a forecast you can defend. Understand how public agencies and contractors buy — cooperatives, GSA, open market, and small-business programs — and put the right path on the quote. Work with inside support and leadership on pricing, packets, and anything that needs a company signature. Keep accounts, contacts, and follow-up in the CRM. The territory is not run from a notepad. Represent the company at vendor days, site visits, and trade shows.
Bring the field back:
who else is on the account, when contracts renew, and where we can be useful. What Good Looks Like in the First Year Assigned accounts are on a cadence you own — walks, quotes, and reorders are not waiting on a general inbox. You have opened or expanded accounts that buy more than once. Your territory plan and next actions live in the CRM. You can explain, in plain language, which buying path a customer should use. Quota is set at offer. Skills and ExperienceYou Should Be Strong At Outside, field B2B sales on a territory you ran yourself (three or more years). Industrial distribution, MRO, safety, PPE, facilities, utilities, or selling to government contractors is the pattern we want. Turning a new or thin account into repeat orders. Be ready to walk through one of those stories. You Should Also Be Solid At Working a purchasing desk, a shop floor, and a job-site trailer — not only a conference room. Everyday CRM, email, Excel, and Teams. Building a weekly call plan and keeping it. Required to Do the Job Ability to be with customers about four days a week, with occasional overnights in Southern California. Valid California driver's license, acceptable driving record, and a reliable vehicle. Ability to lift about 50 pounds of samples and be on your feet through a warehouse walk. Ability to pass a background check for access to government, military, and contractor sites. Helpful, Not Required Selling MRO, PPE, or safety into utilities, cities, counties, federal agencies, or primes. Familiarity with public-sector or contractor purchasing (cooperatives, GSA, purchase orders, small-business goals). Existing relationships in San Diego County facilities, utilities, Navy/USMC, or local contractors. Military or first-responder background. High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience, preferred. Veterans, reservists, military spouses, and people with government-contractor experience are encouraged to apply. Growth This is a full territory-owner seat, not a trainee role. People who grow the book take on larger accounts and more complex public-sector and contractor work. In a company this size, strong performers are the people we build the next territory around — with a short line to leadership, not a three-layer wait for a pricing decision. How We Work Field first. Replenishment is the job, not a distraction from "real" selling. Mission first. Our products keep line workers, facilities crews, and service members safe at work. We are a veteran-founded company and we act like the products matter, because they do. If that resonates, you will fit here. Assigned accounts first. A logo farther up the map is not a reason to skip the book you were hired to own. Small company, no layers. You bring a recommendation; decisions move. Leadership knows your accounts by name, and a pricing call gets answered the same day, not routed through three approvers. Modern back office. We have invested in tooling — including AI-assisted quoting and product lookup — so paperwork does not eat your field days. Your job is walks, relationships, and the next purchase order. A defined lane. Industrial, facilities, utilities, government, and contractors. Other teammates cover law enforcement and California state agencies.
Who this is for:
People who like account work — getting on the walk list, earning the next purchase order, and still making the harder government and contractor calls. People who get real satisfaction from the tactical side of selling: the cold stop that turns into a walk, the walk that turns into a PO, and the PO that turns into a standing order.
Who should not apply:
People who want a national inside-sales queue, a finished territory with no hunting, a police-department book, or a role where someone else does the driving, walking, and asking. Compensation and Benefits Base $70,000-$90,000, depending on experience and existing relationships. Uncapped commission. On-target $130,000-$160,000. Medical, dental, and vision. 401(k). Paid time off and holidays. Vehicle and fuel allowance. Reimbursed travel and customer entertainment. Phone and laptop. The range is a guideline, not a guarantee of an offer. Final compensation depends on experience, relationships, and internal equity. How to Apply Send your resume through this posting. In a short paragraph, describe an account you opened from scratch or took over and turned into regular repeat orders: how you got in, how you kept the cadence, and what it billed. Cold-opened stories beat inherited ones. Black Box Safety, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. We are veteran-owned. We welcome applications from veterans, reservists, military spouses, and former first responders. If you need a reasonable accommodation during the application or interview process, tell us and we will work with you.
