Southern Metalcraft Inc

Business Development Manager

Job Description

Our Story Established in 1974, Southern Metalcraft is a custom sheet metal fabricating firm located in Social Circle, Georgia. From the beginning we have been constantly striving to provide the most advanced processing capabilities to our customers. With all manufacturing services in-house, we are able to handle any project, from the simple part to the complex assembly. From order taking through delivery, our first priority is to meet our customers' needs. The most important and valued asset of SMI is our employees. Good equipment is only as good as those who operate it, and we take pride in finding, training, and keeping personnel that produce top quality products. We have accomplished this by promoting a positive work environment that allows our employees to grow and become skilled at multiple tasks and work centers. Job Summary The Business Development Manager is a newly created, hunter-focused position responsible for winning new OEM and other large-account business for Southern Metalcraft. This role identifies, qualifies, and closes new customer relationships that meet SMI's opportunity standards — from a minimum qualified opportunity of $100,000 in annual revenue potential up through strategic accounts exceeding $1,000,000. The Business Development Manager works closely with SMI's inside technical sales partner to assess manufacturability, capacity fit, and pricing before pursuing and closing new business, then transitions won accounts to that role for ongoing account management. This position requires regular travel, including daily and overnight trips, to build relationships with customers and prospects throughout the region. The Business Development Manager reports directly to the President and does not have direct supervisory responsibility over the Estimating, Order Entry/Customer Service, or Purchasing functions. Core Responsibilities 1. New Business Development & Prospecting Research and add new target accounts that fit SMI's Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and show credible repeatable-part potential. Identify and engage new decision-makers — purchasing, sourcing, engineering, operations, supply chain, or executive contacts — at target OEM and large accounts. Conduct consistent outbound prospecting, including personalized outreach, phone calls, and live prospect conversations, to build a qualified pipeline. Secure discovery meetings, face-to-face prospect meetings, and facility visits/tours to assess fit, needs, timing, and opportunity. Represent SMI at industry trade shows, customer events, and business-development functions to generate new leads and referrals. 2. Opportunity Qualification & Technical Partnership Qualify prospective opportunities against SMI's minimum qualified opportunity threshold of $100,000 in annual revenue potential, with preferred opportunities in the $250,000-$1,000,000 range and strategic opportunities exceeding $1,000,000. Partner closely with SMI's inside technical sales role to assess manufacturability, capacity fit, and part-family repeatability before committing significant pursuit time to an opportunity. Determine, together with the inside technical partner, who leads specific client conversations based on the customer's needs and the stage of the relationship. Escalate strategic opportunities (exceeding $1,000,000 in annual potential) to the President for awareness and alignment on pursuit strategy. 3. Quoting Coordination & Deal Negotiation Coordinate with the inside technical sales/estimating role to develop accurate, competitively positioned quotations for new-business opportunities. Lead pricing strategy and contract negotiations involving cost, terms, delivery requirements, and long-term agreements for new accounts. Confirm quotes reflect SMI's cost structure, capacity, and margin objectives before presenting pricing to a prospective customer. Escalate pricing or contract terms outside standard parameters to the President before committing to a customer. Follow up consistently on open quotes to move opportunities toward a decision. 4. Account Transition & Strategic Relationship Management Serve as the primary point of contact for new OEM and large accounts through the initial opportunity, award, and launch phases. Transition newly won accounts to the inside sales/estimating role for day-to-day order entry, customer service, and account management once the relationship is established. Maintain periodic strategic-level contact — typically monthly to quarterly — with SMI's largest and most strategic accounts, coordinating with the President and inside partner as appropriate. Monitor overall customer satisfaction on new accounts during the transition period and help resolve any early-stage issues in partnership with Operations and Quality. 5. Travel & Field Engagement Travel regularly, including daily local/regional trips and overnight travel, to meet with current and prospective customers and support business-development activities. Plan travel schedules to maximize prospect and customer coverage across target markets and territories. Represent SMI professionally in all customer-facing and industry settings. Coordinate travel and customer-visit schedules with the President and inside partner for strategic accounts and key opportunities. 6. Pipeline Forecasting, CRM Management & Reporting Maintain accurate, current prospect, opportunity, and pipeline records in Funnel Maker (CRM), including qualification tier, opportunity size, and next steps. Maintain pipeline coverage of approximately 3-5 times quarterly quota to support consistent new-business results. Develop and maintain new-business forecasts and pipeline reports; report performance against goals to the President on a regular basis. Track and report key performance indicators, including new logos won, qualified opportunities created, win rates, new annualized revenue, and new annualized gross profit. 7. Communication & Cross-Functional Coordination Communicate new-account requirements, forecasts, and commitments clearly to the inside sales/estimating role, Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain. Meet regularly with the President to review pipeline status, new-business performance, and strategic priorities; escalate significant customer, pricing, or operational issues promptly. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications & Competencies Required Five or more years of B2B sales or business-development experience within a manufacturing or industrial environment, with a demonstrated track record of winning new accounts. Demonstrated experience developing new OEM or high-volume manufacturing accounts and managing complex RFQs, pricing, and contract negotiations. Ability to build senior-level relationships with purchasing, sourcing, engineering, and executive decision-makers at target accounts. Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, production capacity, lead times, costing, and supply-chain considerations, sufficient to identify viable opportunities. Strong prospecting discipline and ability to consistently meet activity-based pipeline-development targets. Ability to travel regularly, including daily and overnight travel, to support customers and business-development activities. Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Preferred Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered. Experience selling into or pursuing accounts within data center, agricultural equipment, material handling, food, packaging, or other OEM/industrial sectors. Established network of OEM purchasing, engineering, and executive contacts within the Southeast region. Experience partnering with a technical/inside sales or estimating counterpart to qualify and size complex manufacturing opportunities. Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication processes (laser cutting, forming/press brake, welding, hardware insertion, finishing). Proficiency with CRM and ERP systems (experience with Funnel Maker and/or JobBOSS preferred) and Microsoft Office applications. Demonstrated track record of exceeding new-business quotas or revenue growth targets in a manufacturing or industrial sales role.
