Job Description

Ice Cream Shop Manager Nico's Ice Cream Monterey, CA Job Details Part-time | Full-time $40,000 - $50,000 a year 8 hours ago Qualifications Moving Employee relationship building Performance management Team development Hiring Driver's License Recruiting Full Job Description Role Overview Nico's Real Fruit Ice Cream is looking for a dependable, organized, and proactive Ice Cream Shop Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day operation of our Monterey shop. This is a hands-on management role. The Manager will spend time working alongside the team in the shop while also owning the systems that keep the business running: staffing, scheduling, employee accountability, training, inventory, supply coordination, cleanliness, organization, and day-to-day problem solving. The right person does not need to have years of restaurant management experience. We care more about finding someone who is reliable, capable, communicative, organized, and willing to take genuine responsibility for the shop. The goal is for the Manager to become the primary point person for daily operations and ensure the shop runs smoothly without requiring regular involvement from ownership. Primary Responsibilities Own the employee schedule and ensure the shop is appropriately staffed. Manage employee availability, time-off requests, shift swaps, call-outs, and coverage. Take primary responsibility for resolving staffing and coverage issues. Lead and communicate consistently with the Supervisor, Shift Leads, and Swirlers. Hold employees accountable for attendance, reliability, performance, cleanliness, and shop standards. Help recruit, interview, hire, onboard, and train new team members. Oversee employee training and ensure new hires progress toward working independently. Coach employees and develop strong Shift Leads and Supervisors. Oversee inventory levels, ordering needs, weekly counts, and identification of shortages. Coordinate and execute with supply pickups and transportation. Maintain high standards for shop cleanliness, organization, food safety, and presentation. Ensure opening, closing, cleaning, and operational procedures are consistently followed. Identify equipment or maintenance issues and coordinate routine solutions. Independently resolve normal day-to-day operational problems. Escalate significant financial, legal, personnel, or facility issues to ownership when appropriate. Help coordinate staffing and operations for catering and private events. Work regular in-shop shifts and perform Swirler responsibilities as needed. Assist with ice cream production, half-pint production, restocking, cleaning, and other normal shop responsibilities. Move and organize inventory and supplies between the shop and storage areas. Maintain clear communication with ownership and provide concise updates on important operational issues. Leadership & Ownership The Manager is ultimately responsible for ensuring the day-to-day operating system works.
Our general leadership structure is:
Swirlers → Shift Leads / Supervisor → Ice Cream Shop Manager → Owner Shift Leads and the Supervisor are there to solve problems and provide leadership during individual shifts. The Manager is responsible for making sure those leaders—and the team as a whole—have what they need to succeed. That means the Manager should not simply pass problems up to ownership. They are expected to use good judgment, take initiative, and independently solve routine staffing, customer-service, inventory, training, and operational issues. At the same time, we don't expect the Manager to do everything themselves. A major part of the role is delegating effectively, developing the team, and creating accountability so that the shop isn't dependent on any one person. Schedule & Physical Expectations This position will generally require 30-40 hours per week, with some flexibility depending on seasonality and the needs of the shop. The Manager should expect a combination of in-shop operational shifts and management/administrative responsibilities. Availability during weekends and other important operating periods will be necessary. This is an active food-service environment. The position requires the ability to perform the essential functions of the role, with reasonable accommodation where applicable, including standing and moving throughout shifts, bending and reaching, and lifting/carrying ingredients and normal shop supplies (up to 40 lbs). Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license are strongly preferred, as the Manager may assist with supply pickups, events, errands, or other operational needs. Who We're Looking For A strong Manager at Nico's is someone who: Is exceptionally reliable and follows through on commitments. Takes ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do. Is organized and capable of managing multiple priorities. Communicates clearly with employees and ownership. Is comfortable giving direction and holding employees accountable. Can build positive relationships with employees while maintaining professional standards. Notices problems early and takes action to solve them. Remains calm and practical when unexpected situations arise. Is willing to work alongside the team rather than managing exclusively from the sidelines. Takes pride in maintaining a clean, organized, welcoming shop. Understands when to make a decision independently and when something genuinely needs to be escalated. Wants an opportunity to take meaningful responsibility for a growing local business. Compensation & Benefits Compensation for this position is expected to be $40,000-$50,000 per year, depending on experience, availability, responsibilities, and overall fit. The expected workload is approximately 30-40 hours per week, with flexibility based on seasonality and operational needs. Benefits options are negotiable and can be discussed as part of the overall compensation package with the selected candidate. What Success Looks Like Success means Nico's operates consistently whether or not an owner is physically present. The shop is properly staffed. Call-outs and coverage are handled. Employees know what is expected of them. Inventory and supplies are available when needed. New hires are trained properly. The shop remains exceptionally clean and organized. Routine problems are resolved quickly. Customers receive a consistently great experience. Ultimately, we're looking for someone who can take real ownership of the shop's daily operations, build a dependable team around them, and make Nico's a great place for both customers and employees.
