Job Description

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT FIELD SPECIALIST
CHARLOTTE, NC
Flyaway Geese | Full-Time | Year-Round Want a job where your office is outdoors and your coworker is a Border Collie? Flyaway Geese is hiring a full-time Wildlife Management Field Specialist for our Charlotte-area operations. For nearly 30 years, Flyaway Geese has provided professional, humane Canada goose management using highly trained working Border Collies. Our teams work at corporate campuses, universities, parks, apartments, healthcare facilities and other commercial properties. No goose-control or Border Collie experience is required. We will train the right person. What we can't train is reliability, judgment, work ethic and the ability to work independently.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Travel to commercial properties throughout the Charlotte area Work with a professionally trained Border Collie to move Canada geese from client properties Learn goose behavior and professional wildlife-hazing techniques Perform scheduled property visits, sometimes multiple times per day Assess properties and determine where birds are entering, feeding and resting Document bird counts, activity and results after each visit Take photos and videos when needed Communicate professionally with clients and members of the public Care for and work safely with your assigned dog Maintain company vehicle and field equipment Follow company safety, animal-welfare and wildlife-management protocols Respond to changing conditions and make good decisions independently in the field
THIS IS NOT A 9-5 DESK JOB
Canada geese don't work business hours. Our work often requires early mornings, evenings, weekends and changing schedules based on bird activity. Some days are easy. Some are hot, cold, wet, muddy or long. If you need the exact same schedule and routine every day, this probably isn't the right job. If you like being outside, working independently and having every day be a little different, you may love it.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We're looking for someone who is: Extremely dependable Self-motivated and comfortable working alone Comfortable around dogs Confident driving throughout the Charlotte area Comfortable interacting with clients and the public Able to follow procedures and document their work Observant and able to make good decisions Comfortable using a smartphone and apps for reporting Willing to work early mornings, evenings and some weekends Physically capable of working outdoors and walking commercial properties Interested in learning animal behavior and professional wildlife management
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A DOG TRAINER
We will teach you how to work with our trained Border Collies. In fact, we're more interested in finding someone with excellent judgment, reliability and work ethic than someone who simply loves dogs. Experience in any of these areas may be helpful: Animal care or veterinary work Dog handling or training Wildlife or conservation Parks and recreation Golf-course operations Landscaping Agriculture Security or public safety Military service Route-based field service Property management or facilities Outdoor work But none is required for an exceptional candidate.
REQUIREMENTS
Valid driver's license and good driving record Reliable transportation to report to work Ability to pass applicable employment screening Comfortable working around dogs and wildlife Ability to walk significant distances outdoors Ability to work independently Smartphone proficiency Flexible availability, including early mornings, evenings and weekends
ABOUT FLYAWAY GEESE
Flyaway Geese has specialized in humane Canada goose management using trained Border Collies for nearly 30 years. Our dogs and handlers work on properties ranging from universities and parks to healthcare campuses and major commercial facilities. This is a specialized profession, and we provide the training. For the right person, this can become much more than a field job. We're looking for someone who can grow into greater responsibility within our Charlotte operations.
TO APPLY
Please send your resume or work history and answer these questions: Why does this type of job interest you? Are you available for early mornings, evenings and weekends? Tell us about a job where you had to work independently without direct supervision. What experience, if any, do you have working with dogs or other animals? Tell us about a time something unexpected happened at work and you had to decide what to do without immediately asking a supervisor. What does \"dependable\" mean to you in a job where you often work alone? Please answer the questions. We're much more interested in learning how you think and work than receiving a perfect resume.
