Company Overview Sensor Concepts & Applications, Inc. (SCA) is a pioneering leader in sensor technology, specializing in the development and evaluation of advanced sensor systems since 1989. As a small, woman-owned company, we collaborate closely with Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense agencies to innovate in nonintrusive inspection systems and sensor applications across various security and defense sectors. SCA is seeking the support of a highly motivated and skilled chemist in the DC metropolitan area in support of LSS' Interdiction Technology Branch (ITB) Rapid Technology Assessment (RTA) team. The duty station will be at
INTERDICT
Science Center (ISC) in Ashburn, VA. The primary responsibilities of the position will be to assess Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Chemical Identification equipment for performance and suitability in both the laboratory and field environments. This will include writing test plans, collecting data, and writing reports on the findings. The chemist will collaborate with ISC while performing chemical equipment assessments and conduct chemical analyses and physical testing of materials, chemicals, physiological specimens, and other products. These details provide an opportunity to collaborate with other DHS and interagency components, including the Departments of Defense and Justice; experiment with emerging tools/technologies; and develop knowledge products that will inform data driven investment and policy for CBP's operational components.
Responsibilities :
  • Assess COTS equipment for performance and suitability; primarily Chem ID equipment but may also include supporting assessments of other COTS technologies.
  • Write and brief plans, results, and report on assessment findings to sponsors and stakeholders internal and external to CBP.
  • Develop and conduct tests for chemical ingredients, substances, and materials.
  • Analyze substances to determine their composition and concentration of elements.
  • Up to 25% travel required. Will include a mix of indoor and outdoor work for 1-2 weeks at a time to support data collection events at the laboratory(s), Forward Operating Laboratories (FOL)s, and Ports of Entry (POEs).
  • Will support a hybrid work combination of in-person/telework/remote work.
Required Qualifications :
  • Must have a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, biochemistry, or other relevant field.
  • 5+ years of related experience.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory technology, tools, and tests.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills to produce accurate reports and brief results to stakeholders.
  • Solid understanding of lab health and safety regulations.
  • Exceptional analytical research skills.
Highly Desired:
  • Completed background investigation.
  • Advanced academic degree in relevant field.
Test & Evaluation Experience Pay:
$80,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
