Job Description

Laboratory Safety Specialist:
Responsible for establishing, implementing, monitoring, and maintaining laboratory materials compliance through hazardous materials management, environmental health and safety (EHS) programs, and transportation safety requirements. Coordinates reporting, training, auditing, incident investigations, and regulatory compliance activities to ensure safe laboratory operations and adherence to company requirements and applicable regulations. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology, Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related technical field. Equivalent laboratory experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree will be considered. Four (4) or more years of directly related experience in hazardous materials compliance, laboratory operations, environmental compliance, safety, or hazardous waste management. Professional certifications such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Professional Engineer (PE), or equivalent credentials are preferred. Serve as a subject matter expert in laboratory safety and regulatory compliance, hazardous materials management, environmental regulations, and transportation safety requirements. Develop, document, implement, and maintain laboratory safety, environmental, and EHS programs in accordance with applicable federal, state, local, and company requirements. Maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements and communicate changes that impact laboratory and operational activities. Own and manage the full hazardous materials inventory life cycle within the facility, including requisitioning, receipt, labeling, inventory control, storage compatibility, expiration monitoring, chemical/reagent/sample disposition, and documentation in accordance with company requirements and applicable regulations. Coordinate and authorize hazardous waste and disposal activities, including waste accumulation, segregation, container labeling, disposal coordination, and waste manifest review/authorization, as applicable. Coordinate environmental reporting, sampling, inspections, audits, testing, and regulatory submissions as required. Drive consistent implementation of environmental, laboratory safety, and hazardous materials requirements across assigned locations. Record, maintain, and analyze safety-related incident data, including incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action activities. Create and deliver training programs covering laboratory safety, hazardous materials handling, environmental compliance, emergency response, and regulatory requirements. Conduct inspections and investigations to identify risks and opportunities for improvement related to laboratory safety, hazardous materials management and environmental compliance. Partner with laboratory, facilities, sustainability, and operational teams to ensure compliance with company programs and regulatory obligations. Analyze, interpret, and validate information regarding hazardous materials, laboratory operations, environmental impacts, and safety risks. Represent the organization during internal and external audits, regulatory reviews, and compliance assessments. Support continuous improvement, 5S, and operational excellence initiatives. Effectively communicate policy requirements and compliance expectations to all levels of the organization. Read and follow the UL Solutions Code of Conduct and all physical and digital security practices. Perform other duties as directed.
