Health Physicist III Summary:

Performs independent, complex, and/or non-repetitive evaluations and inspections and reviews of complex, special, or unusual use licenses and license applications for the receipt, possession, use, transfer, ownership, or disposal of radioactive material and/or performs evaluations, inspections and registration of radiation-generating equipment.

Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience OR equivalent combination of 6 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in natural sciences, engineering, health physics, engineering, radiation physics, chemistry, or radiological science, physical science, biological science, radiological safety, or related field, including 2+ years in radiological safety and nuclear material regulation.

License/Certification:

Valid driver's license and/or access to transportation for statewide travel.

Other Requirements:

1. Must be at least 18 years old and have proof of U.S. Citizenship. 2. Must be willing and able to perform job duties characterized as a radiation worker as per the New Hampshire Rules for the Control of Radiation. 3. Must be eligible, willing and able to participate in applicable NRC, EPA, FEMA, FDA, DOE and other training courses, workshops, meetings and seminars, which may require out-of-state travel. 4. Must be able to lift and carry survey equipment, which may weigh as much as 45 pounds over rough terrain and up ladders and/or temporary stairs in construction situations. 5. Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions to participate in incidents and inspections. 6. Must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends, and for 24-hour on-call availability. 7. Must be eligible and willing to obtain security clearance for entry into classified areas of federal facilities if required (e.g. inspection or incident response for classified sections of federal facilities).

(AGENCY/POSITION-SPECIFIC): Performs independent license application, including sealed source and device registration reviews, writes letters to resolve application details, writes licenses, and performs licensee or potential licensee or radiation

•generating equipment inspections for all categories. Trains lower level Health Physicists and new staff in license application review, registration of radiation-generating equipment and inspection procedures by acting as a mentor. Participates in incident/accident response involving radioactive material or radiation-generating equipment. Demonstrates a clear understanding of Section, and Department policies and procedures. Evaluates complex or unusual radiation problems in the medical, academic, industrial, or environmental use of sources of radiation and recommends appropriate action. Acts as project coordinator for decommissioning of radioactive material sites or other major projects. Reviews documents and conducts assigned research regarding new uses of radioactive material and radiation-generating equipment, and licensing and registration issues for use by others in the Section. Understands and uses a wide variety of radiation survey detection instrumentation. Understands New Hampshire Rules for the Control of Radiation and initiates rule revision.
