Legislative Intern

Job Description

Summary:
The Legislative Intern will assist the Chief of Staff with legislative research projects, hearings, and other substantive assignments and administrative tasks. Previous interns have worked on a variety of issues, including environmental, finance, and health legislation. The position requires a highly organized individual with a keen attention to detail and strong work ethic, and proven ability to excel in a fast-paced environment. Our team values strong written and oral communication skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to take initiative. Residing in the 36th legislative district and fluency in Spanish is a plus. The Legislative Intern is expected to report to the District Office in Passaic for 10 hours per week.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Monitor legislative activity that may have a direct impact on the 36th Legislative District.
  • Assist with overseeing the progression of bills with which the Assemblyman is involved as they move from committee to the floor.
  • Write and review legislative memos.
  • Answer phones professionally and take detailed messages.
  • Maintain up-to-date status reports on all legislation affecting the district, legislation in which the Assemblyman is a principal sponsor, or legislation on which the Assemblyman is a co-sponsor.
  • Recommend co-sponsorships of legislation to the Assemblyman.
  • Draft responses to constituent inquiries via e-mail, written correspondence and perform updates to existing databases.
  • Manage district and state-wide events in conjunction with the Communications Director.
  • Perform special projects assigned by the Assemblyman and/or Chief of Staff.
  • Safeguard confidentiality of office files and information received.
  • Respond to incoming telephone calls and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
Job Types:
Part-time, Internship Pay:
$1.00 - $21.84 per hour
