Job Description

Job Summary Alpine Township is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time Planning & Zoning Assistant. This position supports the Planning & Zoning Department by providing customer service; reviewing and issuing permits; preparing materials and minutes for Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings; managing records; and performing other administrative duties. Essential Duties & Reponsibilities Respond to inquiries from residents, contractors, and other parties, providing general information and guidance regarding Township requirements and procedures. Maintain departmental paper and electronic files, databases, and filing systems. Maintain the official copy of the Township Zoning Ordinance and issue notices of ordinance updates. Prepare regular status and year-end reports and complete special projects as requested. Review zoning and building permit applications for zoning compliance and issue zoning permits as authorized. Review and issue open-air business, solicitor, and other general ordinance permits, as appropriate. Coordinate geographic information system updates with REGIS staff. Collect fees, verify departmental billings, and perform related bookkeeping duties. Reconcile departmental funds with the Treasurer's Office, track amounts paid and owed, and process required refunds. Maintain and update the BS&A permit system and other recordkeeping systems, coordinating information and activities with other Township departments. Prepare correspondence, public notices, required legal mailings, press releases, forms, brochures, and other departmental materials. Attend Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and committee meetings; assist with meeting preparation; and prepare minutes within eight days. Update the Township website with meeting agendas, minutes, and other information as needed. Work with the Building Administrative Assistant to assist walk-in customers of the Building and Planning & Zoning departments. Coordinate with the Building Official and Planning Director to provide office coverage during paid time off. Perform other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Valid Michigan driver's license. Excellent customer service, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer systems. Ability to attend evening Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings. Ability to manage multiple deadlines and changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Ability to gather information, maintain accurate records, and prepare detailed reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when working with the public and Township employees. Preferred Qualifications Experience in municipal government or general office administration. Compensation and Benefits Part-time schedule of 24 to 30 hours per week. Starting wage of $22.00 to $25.00 per hour. Access to a 457(b) deferred compensation plan Access to a Flexible Spending account. Paid sick time and holidays if a holiday falls on a scheduled workday.
