Planning Technician

Job Description

Under general supervision, the Planning Technician performs technical work collecting, organizing, reviewing, evaluating, and reporting planning data in conjunction with and for other Community Development staff members. This position provides support to various boards and commissions and to internal and external customers.

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Provides information to citizens, developers, engineers, architects, businesses, property owners, contractors and other City departments regarding application processes, ordinances, regulations and neighborhood programs. Accepts applications and conducts completeness checks, plan reviews and responds to inquiries from applicants; facilitates/schedules the application review process to ensure City and applicant input. Researches information and prepares public meeting documents; assists and educates citizens, businesses, and non-profits regarding zoning, development, and neighborhood programs; provides technical support to the department. Designs, drafts, and organizes maps and information for projects, reports, and publications. Creates maps and graphics using specialized software to display data for reports and presentations; prepares information for public hearing notices. Reviews and processes rezoning, ordinance amendments, site plans, special use permits, variances and other project proposals. Collects and maintains information for departmental databases. Reviews staff level site plans for conformance with City ordinances and policies. Prepares zoning verification information and creates documentation of zoning upon request. Processes and manages department's invoices, returns, escrows, payroll, and check requests. May be required to attend City board and/or commission meetings to provide staff support; attends and supports neighborhood meetings as needed. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position. Requires an Associate's degree in Urban Planning, Construction or related field (e.g. Geography, Political Science) supplemented by two (2) years of experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
