GUIDANCE COUNSELOR MIDDLE SCHOOL JOB GOAL
The school Guidance Counselor utilizes leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote students' success, provide preventative services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses all students' academic, career, and personal/social development. The guidance counselor will consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Master's Degree is required. Hold a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Guidance Counselor (NT) Endorsement OR a School Guidance Counselor License issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Aids students in course and subject selection based on students' Educational Development Plan. Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students and classes studying occupations. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data and works with students to evolve education and occupation plans based on such evaluation. Works to discover and develop students' abilities. Works to resolve students' educational handicaps. Works with administrators to plan and schedule school curriculum. Registers students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school's varied learning opportunities. Enrolls all students for the school year and advises them on graduation requirements. Works to prevent students from dropping out of school. Help students evaluate career/college interests and choices. Remain readily available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity. Works with students individually to solve personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health, attendance, and emotional adjustment. Arranges for consultants from colleges and industry for interested students. Monitors student transcripts and credits for high school graduation. Supervises the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications. Makes recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships. Provides student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions mandated by the Board Policy on student records. Confers with parents whenever necessary and maintains a check on a student's academic progress at the parent's request. Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the counseling department and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled. Advises administrators and faculty on matters of student discipline.

The employee must be able to use various instructional materials in the classroom. The employee must use hands and arms to manipulate objects. The employee must use keyboards, tools, and other controls. The employee must sit and stand for long periods. The employee must have normal vision and hearing with or without aid. The employee must be able to move about the assigned location unaided during the day.
