Housing Support Advocate

QUALIFICATIONS 1.

Bachelor's Degree in social work, psychology, human services or related field, required. 2. One to three years of experience in case management, information and referral, direct service and/or advocacy required. 3. Willingness to work with low-income/homeless persons struggling to achieve self-sufficiency. 4. Computer skills required. 5. Knowledge of community and educational resources available within area of responsibility. 6. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 7. Excellent verbal/written communication skills. 8. Must be able to achieve HMIS certification within the first 40 hours of employment. 9. Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel within the service area. 10. Must be able to travel to, and conduct, regular home visits. 11. Must be sympathetic to the goals of a Community Action Agency. 12. Must successfully pass all agency required background checks. WAGE $23.00/hour plus agency fringe benefits Fringe benefits include, but are not limited to, four-day workweek, health insurance, life insurance, paid time off, and 11 paid holidays per year.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 1.

Assist individuals and family households experiencing homelessness with search and location of rental units working towards housing stability. 2. Conduct entire household assessments to help clients identify needs and develop self-identified goals. Through use of housing case management, promote self-sufficiency by working with households on specified goals, helping them to increase their income, and work towards permanent housing by maintaining monthly contact. In addition, provide support, leveraging internal and external resources, assisting household members with life skills, and accessing community resources. 3. Acquire and maintain working knowledge of all U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) guidelines and the provision of services. As well as federal and state offices on civil rights, Violence Against Women Act Housing Discrimination Protections and Michigan Landlord Tenant Laws on all applicable material. 4. Conduct initial safety inspections of housing units and ongoing safety inspections as needed to ensure compliance with HUD guidelines. 5. Attend and participate in trainings, conferences, and other related agency functions, as requested. Homeless Advocacy Specialists must complete HMIS, HQS, SOAR, and SPDAT training.
