First Unitarian Church of San José (FUCSJ) is seeking a Nursery Teacher for the 2026-2027 church program year with the possibility of extension into future years. The position is on Sundays from 10:30am to 1pm. Total 2.5 hrs/week with extra hours possible during church events. Position Summary:
The Nursery Teacher provides a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment for infants and young children during Sunday services and Religious Education programming. Model Unitarian Universalist values through your interactions by fostering kindness, curiosity, inclusion, respect, and compassion in every classroom experience. This role supports children's social, emotional, and developmental growth through responsive caregiving, play-based learning, and positive relationships with children and families.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide attentive supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of all children.
  • Check in with the Director of Religious Education regarding the weekly activities, and prepare the needed supplies. Activities include interacting with children through stories, discussions, crafts, sensory play, music, movement, and outdoor exploration.
  • Use positive, nurturing guidance to support children's emotional and social development.
  • Provide basic personal care, including diapering and toileting, while maintaining proper sanitation procedures.
  • Welcome children and families, assist new families with registration, and communicate positively with families at pick-up.
  • Work collaboratively with Religious Education staff and volunteers, and take initiative to anticipate the needs of the classroom.
Qualifications:
Experience working with infants and young children preferred. Knowledge of child development and positive guidance. CPR/First Aid certified or willing to obtain certification. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and actively engage with children throughout the working shift. Reliable, professional, organized, and compassionate.
