Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Peer Support Specialist - HOPE provides outreach, engagement, peer support, and resource coordination for veterans and other individuals experiencing homelessness, housing instability, behavioral health challenges, substance use disorders, and related life challenges. Using lived experience and recovery-oriented practices, this position promotes hope, wellness, housing stability, self-sufficiency, and meaningful engagement with healthcare, behavioral health, housing, employment, and supportive-service systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Outreach & Community Engagement Conduct outreach and engagement activities with veterans and other individuals experiencing homelessness, housing instability, behavioral health challenges, and substance use disorders. Build trusting relationships using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and participant-centered approaches. Participate in street outreach, shelter outreach, encampment engagement, and community-based service delivery. Represent ABCCM and Veterans Services of the Carolinas at outreach events, collaborative meetings, and community initiatives. Peer Support & Recovery Services Provide peer support, mentorship, encouragement, and recovery-oriented guidance using lived experience. Assist participants in strengthening coping skills, recovery engagement, self-advocacy, life skills, and community integration. Encourage participation in healthcare, behavioral health, housing, employment, recovery, and supportive-service programs. Promote participant stabilization and continuity of care during periods of transition or crisis. Resource Navigation & Care Coordination Assist participants in identifying needs related to housing, employment, healthcare, behavioral health services, transportation, benefits, and community resources. Coordinate referrals and link participants to healthcare providers, behavioral health agencies, VA services, housing organizations, shelters, employment resources, and other community supports. Maintain current knowledge of community resources, eligibility requirements, referral processes, and supportive-service systems. Collaborate with outreach staff, care coordinators, healthcare providers, and community partners to support participant goals. Documentation & Ministry Support Maintain timely, accurate, and complete documentation of outreach activities, participant interactions, referrals, and service coordination activities. Utilize required databases, reporting platforms, and information systems. Maintain compliance with grant requirements, confidentiality standards, and organizational policies. Participate in staff meetings, supervision, training, interdisciplinary coordination, and ministry initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
Current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist certification required or ability to obtain certification within six months of hire. Veteran status required; familiarity with veteran services and military culture preferred. High school diploma or GED required; additional education in Human Services, Behavioral Health, or a related field preferred. Experience in outreach services, homelessness programs, behavioral health support, recovery services, or related human services preferred. Experience working with veterans preferred. Strong computer, documentation, and database skills required. Valid North Carolina driver's license and reliable transportation required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS
Work requires regular travel, operation of a motor vehicle, walking throughout community environments, participation in outreach activities, and use of standard office equipment and reporting systems. The position may involve exposure to inclement weather, environmental hazards, crisis situations, and emotionally complex service environments requiring flexibility, sound judgment, and professional composure.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to manage outreach responsibilities, participant engagement activities, crisis situations, documentation requirements, and community coordination efforts simultaneously. Requires effective communication, problem-solving, emotional resilience, and sound judgment while maintaining professionalism and appropriate boundaries when serving individuals experiencing homelessness, trauma, behavioral health challenges, and other complex life circumstances.
