Job Description

enior Control Designer / Programmer Austgen Electric Inc. —
Controls Division Location:
Griffith, Indiana (Northwest Indiana / Chicago south metro)
Job Type:
Full-time, hourly, on-site with travel to customer sites
Pay:
$55.80 - $67.52 per hour, based on experience Write the code. Build the panel. Start it up. Austgen Electric is a family-owned electrical contractor that has served Northwest Indiana since 1945. Our Controls Division designs, builds, programs, and commissions industrial control systems for manufacturing, process, water/wastewater, and municipal customers across the region. We're hiring a Senior Control Designer / Programmer whose core strength is Rockwell Automation Studio 5000. This is a hands-on technical role: you'll write the logic, design the panels behind it, and be on site when the system goes live. If you're the person others call when the PLC code needs to be right the first time, we want to see your work. What you'll do
  • PLC programming in Studio 5000 Logix Designer — ControlLogix and CompactLogix applications from blank project to commissioned system: structured, well-commented ladder logic, plus function block and structured text where they fit.
  • Program architecture — build clean, reusable code with UDTs, Add-On Instructions, and consistent tag and routine structures that the next programmer can follow.
  • Motion, drives, and networks — configure PowerFlex drives, Kinetix servo where applicable, and EtherNet/IP device networks; set up produced/consumed tags and messaging between controllers.
  • Safety — GuardLogix / safety PLC programming and safety I/O configuration where the application requires it.
HMI / SCADA
— develop operator screens and SCADA applications in FactoryTalk View
ME/SE, GE
Proficy iFIX, and Wonderware (AVEVA InTouch / System Platform), including alarming, trending, historian, and security.
  • Control panel design — schematics, panel layouts, I/O assignments, and bills of material for control panels built in our shop.
  • Upgrades and migrations — convert
PLC-5 / SLC 500
legacy systems to ControlLogix / CompactLogix with minimal downtime.
  • Startup and commissioning — I/O checkout, loop testing, FAT/SAT, on-site troubleshooting, and operator training.
  • Documentation — as-built drawings, commented program backups, I/O lists, and turnover packages that are complete when the job is done.
  • Technical leadership — review code from other programmers, mentor junior designers and electricians, and set programming standards for the division. What we need from you
  • 7+ years of industrial controls experience, with Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000 as your primary platform
  • Demonstrated ability to write a complete PLC program from a functional description or sequence of operations — not just modify existing code
  • Strong working knowledge of ControlLogix and CompactLogix hardware, I/O, and EtherNet/IP networking
HMI / SCADA
development experience in FactoryTalk View
ME/SE, GE
Proficy iFIX, and/or Wonderware (AVEVA InTouch / System Platform)
  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics and work to NFPA 70 (NEC) and NFPA 79
  • Field troubleshooting skill — comfortable diagnosing logic, wiring, network, and instrument problems on a live system
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites in the region for startups and service
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test A plus: AutoCAD Electrical experience — schematic and panel layout drafting, symbol libraries, and automated reports (wire lists, terminal plans, BOMs).
Also nice to have:
Rockwell safety (GuardLogix) and motion (Kinetix) experience.
PLC-5 / SLC 500
migration experience. Ignition SCADA. Process control and PID loop tuning. Water/wastewater or municipal SCADA background. Siemens TIA Portal or other platforms as a secondary skill. What we offer
  • $55.80 - $67.52 per hour, based on experience and demonstrated programming ability
  • Overtime pay for hours over 40
  • Union position — IBEW Local 697 Programmer agreement (membership required after a 30-day grace period)
  • Family health, dental, and vision insurance through the union, beginning the first of the month after eligibility hours are met
  • Annuity contribution of $10.55 per hour worked and pension contribution of $9.15 per hour worked through IBEW Local 697
  • Company-provided laptop and current Rockwell / AutoCAD Electrical software
  • Training and certification support
  • Steady project work for a contractor that has been in this community since 1945
  • A small, direct team — your work is seen, and your input on standards and tools counts
  • Paid vacation starting after 30 days of employment, accruing on hours worked and years of service (based on a 40-hour week): Years of Service Annual Vacation 0-1 years 56 hours 2-3 years 96 hours 4-5 years 120 hours 6-9 years 144 hours 10-14 years 176 hours 15+ years 200 hours How to apply Send your resume to employment@austgen.
com with the subject line "Senior Control Designer / Programmer," or apply through this listing. Submit a sample of a program with your resume. Applications without a program sample will not be considered.
  • A Studio 5000 project file (.ACD or .L5X exported program/routine) or a PDF printout of the logic is acceptable
  • Include a short note on what the program does, the hardware it ran on, and which portions you wrote
  • Remove or redact any customer names, proprietary information, or anything you're not authorized to share — a sanitized excerpt is fine We'll review the sample before the interview and talk through it with you.
We're looking at structure, commenting, tag naming, and how you solved the problem. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug test.
