Open Rank Professor of Data Science Full-time Southern Virginia University seeksapplications for an Open Rank Professor of Data Science to begin January or August 2027. This position is intended for a data sciencefaculty member with the breadth to teach across computer science, mathematics, and data science at the undergraduate level. Faculty in thisposition will typically teach four courses per semester and should be prepared to teach a variety of courses based on their expertise andthe needs of the program. Because we are a small undergraduate university, faculty in this position should be comfortable teaching a broadrange of courses; over the course of a year, a faculty member may teach as many as eight different course preparations. Computer sciencecourses may include computational data science, artificial intelligence, data structures, algorithms, databases, web development, softwareengineering, operating systems, and introductory programming in Python. Mathematics courses may include statistics, college algebra,trigonometry, calculus, discrete mathematics, and linear algebra. We do not expect any one candidate to be able to teach all of thesecourses, but we are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute across multiple areas. Responsibilities Teach four undergraduate courses per semester across computer science, mathematics, and datascience Develop and refine course material Advise and mentor students Fulfill faculty service assignments Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a relatedfield Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses in multiple areas of computer science, mathematics, and/or datascience Strong communication skills and a love of teaching Preferred Qualifications PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field Experience teaching a range ofundergraduate courses across computer science, mathematics, and/or data science Industry experience as a data scientist or softwareengineer, or experience as a computational researcher Experience developing courses and mentoring undergraduate students Applications Applications should include a CV, a letter of interest addressing the desired qualifications, theuniversity's mission, and evidence of teaching effectiveness, and a list of 3 professional references.
