JOB Performs skilled technical work involving the operation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, installation, testing, and documentation of the City's advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), water meters, meter endpoints, and Geographic Information System (GIS) data. Responsible for maintaining the accuracy of the utility's GIS and asset management systems through field verification, GPS data collection, mapping updates, and meter inventory management. Assists with meter replacements, service investigations, customer usage issues, work order management, and coordination between field operations and office personnel. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Water Distribution Superintendent or designee.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Installs, replaces, repairs, tests, and maintains residential, commercial, and industrial water meters and AMI endpoints. Performs meter change-outs associated with routine replacement programs, new service installations, and malfunctioning meters. Investigates customer complaints regarding water consumption, meter accuracy, low pressure, and billing discrepancies. Performs field testing and verification of meter accuracy using approved testing equipment and procedures. Maintains and updates GIS data related to water meters, service lines, valves, hydrants, and other distribution system assets. Collects GPS coordinates and field data for new and existing utility infrastructure. Updates utility mapping, asset attributes, and associated records using GIS software and asset management systems. Maintains accurate meter inventory records including meter numbers, sizes, manufacturers, installation dates, and endpoint information. Programs, configures, troubleshoots, and replaces AMI communication devices and associated hardware. Downloads, reviews, and analyzes AMI data to identify communication failures, abnormal consumption patterns, leaks, or potential meter issues. Assists with identifying water loss through meter investigations, unauthorized usage, and field inspections. Coordinates with Customer Service, Billing, Engineering, and Operations staff to resolve meter and GIS-related issues. Prepares field sketches, reports, maps, and documentation for utility records. Operates GPS equipment, GIS software, tablets, laptops, and mobile data collection devices. Performs routine inspections of meter boxes, lids, setters, and service connections. Assists distribution crews with locating utility infrastructure and verifying asset information. Maintains records of completed work orders, inspections, repairs, and installations. Assists with emergency water main repairs, service interruptions, and utility emergencies as assigned. Operates pickup trucks, utility vehicles, trailers, and light equipment necessary to perform assigned duties. Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and tools. Responds to after-hours emergencies and participates in the department's on-call rotation as required. Performs other related duties as assigned.
