Warehouse Automation & Distribution Center Design Principal Independent Consultant / 1099 | Project-Based | U.S.-Based The Opportunity Chain Mountain is seeking a senior Warehouse Automation & Distribution Center Design expert to support the design and development of a major distribution center project. The operation is primarily pallet-based with some rolled products and is evaluating a highly automated solution incorporating AS/RS, conveyor systems, warehouse software, and related material-handling technologies . This individual will serve as a senior, vendor-neutral advisor, helping the client determine the right automation strategy, facility requirements, technology architecture, and implementation approach. The project may include evaluating existing technology and operating practices in the Netherlands as part of the future-state recommendation. Key Responsibilities Warehouse Automation & Material Handling Develop the overall automation and material-flow strategy for a primarily pallet-based operation. Evaluate pallet AS/RS technologies including unit-load cranes, pallet shuttles, high-bay systems, conveyors, and related automation. Assess handling requirements for rolled products and other non-standard materials. Develop conceptual layouts, storage strategies, throughput requirements, and automation alternatives. Identify capacity constraints and future expansion requirements. Distribution Center & Facility Design Translate operational and automation requirements into facility specifications. Help evaluate existing buildings versus greenfield construction. Define requirements including clear height, column spacing, slab/loading, docks, power, fire protection, equipment footprint, yard requirements, and future expansion. Work alongside real estate, engineering, and construction partners during building/site evaluation.

WMS / WCS / WES

Strategy Assess the client's current warehouse technology environment, including systems currently operating in the Netherlands. Recommend whether existing platforms should be replicated, integrated, upgraded, or replaced. Define future-state architecture across ERP → WMS → WES/WCS → automation and material-handling systems . Remain vendor and technology neutral. Vendor Evaluation & Selection Develop requirements and support

RFI/RFP/RFQ

processes for automation and material-handling vendors. Evaluate solutions from leading integrators and technology providers. Compare system design, performance, scalability, implementation risk, cost, and support capabilities. Represent the client's interests throughout vendor selection and solution design. Business Case & Implementation Roadmap Develop or validate throughput, storage density, pallet/SKU profiles, labor requirements, CapEx, operating costs, and ROI assumptions. Compare conventional, semi-automated, and highly automated alternatives. Develop a practical implementation roadmap from concept through design, vendor selection, construction, commissioning, and go-live. Ideal Background We are looking for someone who has personally designed and delivered automated distribution centers , rather than someone whose experience is primarily software implementation or equipment sales.

The ideal consultant will have:

15+ years of warehouse automation, material handling, distribution center design, or related experience. Significant experience with pallet AS/RS and conveyor integration . Experience designing greenfield and/or major brownfield distribution centers. Strong understanding of WMS, WCS, and WES architecture and automation integration. Experience conducting throughput and capacity modeling. Experience developing specifications and selecting automation/integration vendors. Experience working with major automation providers such as Dematic, Daifuku, Swisslog, Vanderlande, SSI Schäfer, Honeywell Intelligrated, or similar. Ability to operate as the client's vendor-neutral technical advisor . Strong executive communication skills and ability to work directly with operations, IT, engineering, real estate, construction, and executive leadership. Experience handling rolled products, metals, paper, cable, coils, or other non-standard palletized materials would be particularly valuable. Engagement This is a project-based independent consulting opportunity (1099) with Chain Mountain. We are particularly interested in experienced automation and distribution-center leaders who have moved into independent consulting after careers with major automation integrators, engineering firms, manufacturers, or large-scale distribution operations. U.S.-based candidates are preferred, with East Coast availability particularly attractive .

Pay:

$100.00 - $125.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
