  • Take personal ownership especially when things go wrong The Information Systems Technologist is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, administration, troubleshooting, and support of Long Beach Transit's enterprise technology infrastructure, end-user computing environment, and mission-critical transit technology systems under the direction of the Manager, Information Technology.
This position supports both Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT), including desktop computing, business applications, servers, networking, cloud-based technologies, cybersecurity, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) such as Vontas, mSET, Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs), CAD/AVL, onboard communications, video surveillance, passenger information systems, and supporting transit infrastructure. The Information Systems Technologist may be assigned responsibilities supporting enterprise IT services, onboard transit technologies, or a combination of both based on operational needs at any Long Beach Transit location. The position serves as a technical resource to LBT departments and works with employees, vendors, contractors, and other IT personnel to support reliable, secure, and effective technology operations. Provide technical support and administration for enterprise technology, end-user computing, network infrastructure, systems, and business applications. Provide Level I and II technical support for enterprise applications, desktop systems, laptops, mobile devices, printers, and peripheral equipment. Install, configure, deploy, and maintain end-user devices and enterprise technology solutions. Provision user accounts, permissions, hardware, software, and supporting technology resources. Troubleshoot hardware, software, operating systems, Microsoft 365, network connectivity, and business applications. Support office relocations, workstation deployments, conference room technology, and user onboarding/offboarding. Assist with the administration, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of servers, network devices, cloud services, and other enterprise technology platforms. Monitor system availability, capacity, connectivity, and performance to identify, escalate, and resolve technology issues as appropriate. Perform routine system maintenance, software installations, upgrades, patches, configuration changes, and technology refresh activities. Maintain accurate technical documentation, system configurations, procedures, diagrams, inventories, service records, and knowledge-base information. Maintain and track technology assets, equipment assignments, software licensing, warranties, and related inventory records throughout the technology lifecycle. Install, configure, upgrade, and support onboard hardware including vehicle computers, communication gateways, antennas, radios, DVRs, driver consoles, and related peripherals. Maintain cellular communications, GPS technologies, VPN connectivity, vehicle networking, and onboard communications infrastructure. Monitor onboard system performance, vehicle communications, and fleet connectivity to proactively identify and resolve issues. Coordinate software deployments, firmware upgrades, and system patches across the fleet. Support integration between onboard systems and enterprise applications including Vontas, HASTUS, mSET and other agency platforms. Work closely with Operations, Fleet Maintenance, Dispatch, and vendors to resolve field technology issues and improve operational reliability. Diagnose technology-related issues affecting transit operations and assist in resolving issues to minimize disruption to service. Participate in the planning, testing, implementation, deployment, and ongoing support of new technology systems, system upgrades, integrations, and IT projects. Assist in evaluating new technologies, hardware, software, and technical solutions for operational compatibility, supportability, security, and system requirements. Coordinate with technology vendors and service providers to troubleshoot system issues, facilitate repairs, obtain technical support, and ensure timely resolution of service-impacting problems. Protect enterprise and transit technology systems through proactive cybersecurity practices. Perform security monitoring, vulnerability remediation, and compliance activities. Assist with disaster recovery, business continuity, and cybersecurity incident response. Support compliance of technology systems with agency cybersecurity policies and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Participate in system backup, recovery, continuity, and technology resilience activities and periodically assist with testing established recovery procedures. Follow established IT policies, procedures, technical standards, change-management practices, and security requirements. Provide technical guidance, training, and support to employees regarding the proper use of LBT technology systems and equipment. Communicate technology outages, system issues, maintenance activities, and resolution status to appropriate stakeholders. Participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call support schedule as required. Respond to technology incidents and operational needs at LBT facilities and field locations as necessary. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
ATTRIBUTES AND SKILL SETS
Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, enterprise technology, cybersecurity principles, and industry best practices to support secure, reliable, and scalable IT environments. Working knowledge of enterprise networking concepts, including TCP/IP, LAN/WAN, wireless networking, VPNs, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, network connectivity, and related technologies. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows environments, Microsoft 365, identity and access management, endpoint management, virtualization, cloud technologies, and enterprise hardware and software support. Knowledge of systems administration, system monitoring, patch management, backup and recovery, cybersecurity, and technology asset management practices. Ability to troubleshoot integrated technology environments involving hardware, software, networking, communications, and third-party applications. Excellent analytical, organizational, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate and resolve complex technical issues. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and document technical information for both technical and non-technical audiences while providing exceptional customer service. Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing operational needs, and work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Ability to work independently and collaboratively while exercising sound judgment in performing assigned responsibilities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all organizational levels, vendors, contractors, and external service providers. Ability to appropriately prioritize and respond to technology incidents based on operational impact, security risk, and business needs. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, and other productivity and collaboration tools. Commitment to providing high-quality technical support across enterprise IT and transit technology environments, including end-user support, infrastructure, and operational systems.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, Business Information Systems, or a related field is required. Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible experience supporting enterprise technology infrastructure, end-user computing, network infrastructure, systems administration, or transit technology systems is required. Experience supporting integrated enterprise systems, networked devices, field technology, or operational technology environments is highly desirable. Experience with public transit technology, including CAD/AVL, onboard vehicle technology, radio or cellular communications, video surveillance, passenger information systems, or similar operational technologies is desirable. Relevant industry certifications in networking, cybersecurity, Microsoft technologies, cloud services, or related disciplines are desirable.
LICENSES AND OTHER REEQUIRMENTS A
valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required at the time of appointment and throughout employment. Must be able to travel between LBT facilities and field locations as necessary to install, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, or repair technology systems and equipment. Must be available to participate in after-hours, weekend, emergency, and rotating on-call support as operationally required.
