About General Pump Company General Pump Company is a specialized water infrastructure and pump services contractor that supports groundwater and municipal water systems throughout Southern California. The company focuses on the installation, maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and optimization of large-scale water well and pump systems critical to public water supply operations. General Pump serves cities, municipalities, water districts, agricultural operations, industrial facilities, and commercial groundwater systems. Services include water well rehabilitation, pump installation and removal, pump repair and maintenance, mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, groundwater production optimization, equipment diagnostics, and emergency field services. For over 70 years, General Pump Company has supported infrastructure that helps deliver clean and reliable water to millions of people across Southern California. The company combines engineering support, machining, field service, mechanical repair, and hands-on technical operations to solve real-world water infrastructure challenges. Interns and employees gain exposure to practical engineering applications, manufacturing and machining processes, field operations, infrastructure systems, project management, and hands-on problem-solving beyond classroom theory. Internship Description During this internship, you will work directly with experienced applications engineers responsible for designing groundwater wells and pump systems, diagnosing and troubleshooting well production issues, optimizing energy and production efficiency, and supporting repair and rehabilitation projects. This internship provides practical, hands-on engineering experience in the following areas:
  • Selecting pumps and equipment to meet customer water production and efficiency requirements.
  • Conducting and documenting pump tear-downs and inspections to assess performance and identify root causes of failure.
  • Specifying and ordering repair or replacement parts based on inspection results.
  • Inspecting incoming repair and replacement parts for quality assurance and accuracy.
  • Analyzing diagnostic data to evaluate well production issues and support rehabilitation service designs.
  • Participating in occasional field visits to active project sites throughout Southern California.
Internship Details This is a paid internship expected to run from October through December 2026, with interns working a minimum of 32 hours per week (typically 4 days per week). The position is based at our Camarillo location and includes opportunities for occasional field visits and exposure to active project sites throughout Southern California. Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in environmental systems, mechanical, civil engineering, or a related STEM field
  • Rising undergraduate juniors, seniors, or master's students preferred.
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Suite programs.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other 3D design software preferred.
  • Interests in water management, infrastructure, sustainability, manufacturing, or field operations.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills.
