CHRMS specializes in navigating the complex world of out-of-network reimbursements and maximizing recovery on behalf of medical providers from insurance companies. The firm provides a single source solution to medical practices to manage the full revenue cycle process through multiple software platforms, with ongoing enhancements. The Senior Software Engineer / Technical Lead will help design, develop, and modernize our internal software platforms and business applications. The candidate will play a key role in transitioning existing applications and manual business processes into a modern, service-oriented platform. Responsibilities include defining software architecture, developing new applications, integrating disparate systems, and establishing engineering standards. We need someone who contributes at both the architectural and implementation levels—not someone focused exclusively on project management or infrastructure. This is a hands-on technical leadership position for an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, designing maintainable systems, and mentoring other developers.
Key Responsibilities:
Software Architecture & Design
- Lead architectural and technical design of new applications, services, and integrations.
- Define service boundaries, data ownership, API contracts, and communication patterns.
- Design workflow-driven applications with state management, asynchronous processing, and exception handling.
- Develop practical strategies to modernize legacy applications and migrate functionality incrementally.
- Evaluate technologies for maintainability, reliability, security, and cost. Hands-On Software Development
- Design, develop, test, and maintain production software.
- Build backend services, APIs, data-processing pipelines, and system integrations.
- Work with relational databases on schema design, query optimization, and data migrations.
- Integrate internal applications with third-party platforms and external data sources.
- Troubleshoot production reliability and performance; participate actively in code review. Technical Leadership
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to a small development team.
- Establish coding standards, documentation practices, testing approaches, and development workflows.
- Review technical designs and help developers solve difficult engineering problems.
- Collaborate with IT leadership and business stakeholders to translate operational needs into solutions.
- Balance long-term architectural goals with immediate needs, avoiding unnecessary complexity. Cloud & DevOps
- Design and support applications hosted primarily on AWS.
- Work with serverless functions, containers, managed databases, messaging, and storage.
- Support CI/CD, source control, deployment automation, and infrastructure as code.
- Implement appropriate monitoring, logging, access controls, and security practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Modernizing legacy applications or migrating monolithic systems.
- Workflow engines, state machines, event-driven architectures, or asynchronous processing.
- AWS Lambda, Step Functions, ECS, S3, and managed database services.
- Document-processing platforms, data extraction, and AI-assisted automation.
- Application security, authentication, authorization, and auditability.
- SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
- Healthcare, legal, financial services, or other regulated environments, including familiarity with HIPAA-related technical considerations.
- Leading engineering work in a small or midsize organization.
Education and Experience:
- 7+ years of professional software development experience, or equivalent demonstrated expertise.
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering production software applications.
- Strong backend development skills, preferably with Python.
- Solid grasp of architecture, including service-oriented design, APIs, and distributed systems.
- Experience with relational databases and SQL, including data modeling and performance optimization.
- Experience building integrations between applications and external systems.
- Practical experience with AWS or comparable cloud platforms.
- Familiarity with Git, automated testing, deployment pipelines, and modern development practices.
- Experience guiding technical decisions and mentoring or leading developers.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
What Success Looks Like:
In the first year, the successful candidate will:
- Build a thorough understanding of existing applications, integrations, and business workflows.
- Help establish a practical architecture for the next generation of our software platform.
- Take technical ownership of significant development initiatives.
- Introduce consistent code quality, testing, documentation, and deployment practices.
- Improve the team's ability to deliver reliable software without dependence on individual contributors.
- Deliver working software while progressively reducing legacy complexity and technical debt.
The Ideal Candidate:
You are an experienced engineer who has grown into technical leadership while staying actively involved in development. You understand that good architecture is not defined by how many services or technologies are used, but by how reliably and maintainably a system meets business needs. You are comfortable keeping existing systems operating as new solutions are designed and introduced. You can explain technical decisions clearly, challenge assumptions constructively, and see solutions through from design to production.
Work Location & Schedule:
This position is based in our Tinton Falls, New Jersey office. We strongly prefer a candidate who can work on-site full-time. However, we are open to a hybrid arrangement for a highly qualified individual who can maintain a regular, meaningful in-office presence.
