full-time Staff Backend Engineer | Travel / Hospitality Tech | NYC | $220k-$240k + Equity I'm working with a fast-growing travel and hospitality technology business in New York that is investing heavily in its core booking and distribution platform. They're looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to take ownership of a critical backend domain while remaining very hands-on. This is a genuine Staff-level IC role. You'll still be writing production code, but you'll also be setting technical direction, shaping architecture and helping other engineers make better decisions across the platform. The role reports into the Head of Engineering and carries broad ownership across the booking domain and external APIs. What you'll be doing ???? Own architecture and technical direction for a core transactional platform Design and build external APIs and partner integrations Work on complex problems around bookings, payments, reservations and inventory Make key decisions around system design, data modelling and reliability Lead technical decisions that influence multiple engineers Help create patterns and standards other engineers can build from Stay hands-on with production code while operating at Staff level What I'm looking for ? 8+ years in backend/software engineering, or equivalent level of impact Strong experience designing and owning complex production systems Background with transactional systems such as bookings, payments, orders, reservations or inventory Strong API and relational data modelling experience Evidence of technical leadership beyond your own individual tickets Someone who can clearly explain what they personally designed, built and improved Staff, Principal, Lead or a strong Senior Engineer already operating at this level Tech stack ?? Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Postgres and AWS. You do not need to come from a Ruby background. The client is much more interested in strong backend engineering fundamentals, technical judgement and the complexity of systems you've owned. Why it's interesting ????
