Position Overview VTM Vending builds, deploys, and supports unattended retail machines and the software that runs them. Operators depend on three things working together: a web dashboard, a mobile app, and the application on the machine itself. Today, every release across all three is verified by hand. This role exists to end that. You will build VTM's first automated test suite from the ground up and own it as the gate standing between a code change and a machine in the field. There is no suite to inherit. You are building it, and you are accountable for whether it catches what it should. We are initially seeking a 1099 consultant or PTE, with the potential for the role to convert to full-time employment. What You Will Own An automated regression suite that runs on every pull request and blocks a merge when it fails. First deliverable, and everything else depends on it. End to end coverage of the operator web dashboard, running in CI without a human pressing start. Automated coverage of the VTM mobile app across the devices and OS versions our operators actually use. A regression pass for the machine application, executed and signed off on physical hardware before any release reaches the field. API and contract tests against our backend, so breaking changes surface at the service boundary instead of three layers up in the UI. A defect record engineering can act on without a follow up conversation. Steps, build version, environment, expected against actual, severity. A published release gate. Everyone knows what has to be green before we ship. AI applied where testing does not need a human. Scaffolding generated from specs, self healing locators to cut maintenance, and automated triage that separates a real failure from a flaky one. A suite built to extend, so new surfaces and product lines plug into it rather than start over. Testing on Real Hardware Web and mobile are most of the surface area, but not all of it. Our machine application runs on a physical vending machine, in the field, in front of a paying customer, and an emulator pass is not a pass. Before a machine release ships, you will be on the floor at our Solon facility running the regression pass on an actual device. You are not expected to own the hardware stack or the internals of that application. You own proving the software behaves correctly on the thing our customers physically touch, and declining to sign off until it does. What You Bring 3 to 5 years building and maintaining automated test suites, not executing test cases someone else wrote. Fluency writing test code in Python, JavaScript or TypeScript, or Java, and hands on experience with a modern web automation framework. Playwright preferred. Mobile test automation with Appium, Maestro, Espresso, or equivalent, run against real devices rather than simulators. API and contract testing, plus enough SQL to verify what the UI claims against what the database actually holds. CI experience. You have wired a suite into a pipeline and made it run reliably, not just on your own machine. Working knowledge of Android, since our machine application runs on it, and comfort working hands on with physical hardware. Active use of AI tooling in your own workflow. We want to hear what you use, and what you tried and abandoned. Experience somewhere quality processes did not exist yet and you were the one who built them. How You Work VTM runs on five values.
