Back-end Software Engineer

Job Description

Back-end Software Engineer Location:

DEARBORN, Michigan (Hybrid) 4 days per week in office Role Overview Employees in this job function are responsible for designing, building, and operating high-throughput backend systems that ingest, process, and serve large volumes of telematics data from connected vehicle fleets. They work at the intersection of distributed systems, data engineering, and API development, delivering reliable, low-latency services that power fleet intelligence products for commercial and enterprise customers. Key Responsibilities Design and develop scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs that process and expose telematics data, including GPS, trip events, driver behavior, vehicle diagnostics, and sensor telemetry, at fleet scale. Build and maintain real-time and batch data pipelines that ingest high-volume vehicle event streams from messaging systems (e.g., Pub/Sub, Kafka) into data warehouses and operational stores.

Required Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's Degree Experience:

7+ years in IT, with 5+ years in development. Experience in two coding languages or advanced practice in one language.

Technical Skills:
GCP:

Design, deploy, and manage workloads on GCP (Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, IAM, VPC networking, Cloud Composer, etc.), including provisioning infrastructure, configuring security/access controls, and troubleshooting performance or cost issues in production. (3+ years)

Big Data:

Design and optimize data pipelines and storage architectures for large-scale datasets using tools such as Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, or Dataflow; understanding of distributed computing, partitioning, and data lake/warehouse patterns. (3+ years)

Artificial Intelligence & Expert Systems:

Build, train, and deploy machine learning models or rule-based expert systems to support decision automation (e.g., predictive maintenance, fraud detection, recommendation engines); familiarity with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Vertex AI. (1+ years)

API:

Design, build, secure, and document RESTful (or GraphQL) APIs, including authentication/authorization (OAuth2, API keys), versioning, rate limiting, and integration with internal and third-party systems. (3+ years)

BigQuery:

Write optimized SQL queries in BigQuery; manage datasets/partitioning/clustering for performance and cost control; integrate BigQuery with BI tools (e.g., Looker, Data Studio) or downstream applications for reporting/analytics. (2+ years)

Preferred Qualifications Google Cloud Platform:

Broader GCP ecosystem knowledge beyond core required skill, such as Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, GKE (Kubernetes), Cloud Build/CI-CD pipelines, or cost-optimization/FinOps practices.

Languages:

Kotlin, Java, Python, or equivalent JVM/backend language.

Frameworks:

Spring Boot, g

RPC, REST API

design.

Data:

BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Redis, Bigtable, Kafka or Pub/Sub.

Infrastructure:

GCP (or equivalent), Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines.

Practices:

TDD, MLOps-adjacent data pipeline patterns, database performance tuning, API versioning.
