Bus Driver
POSITION SUMMARY
The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, field trips, and other district-approved activities in compliance with state and local laws, district policies, and Ohio Department of Education (ODE) regulations. This position requires a commitment to the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and community trust as required by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS).
QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B or higher, with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements. Must maintain a valid Ohio driver's license and meet CDL requirements under Ohio BMV rules. Hold or obtain Ohio School Bus Operator Certification via pre‑service training and in‑service requirements under
OAC 3301
‑83.10. Must pass a BCI/FBI background check, drug and alcohol testing, physical exam, and driver's record review as required by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Thorough knowledge of Ohio traffic laws and school transportation regulations. Ability to operate a large vehicle safely in all weather conditions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Patience, dependability, and good judgment. Demonstrate professionalism and the ability to work effectively with staff, students, and the administration.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Drive a school bus along assigned routes, following schedules, traffic laws, and district procedures. Adhere to Ohio's laws and district policies for school bus stop procedures, loading/unloading, and safety protocols. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of school buses and transportation vehicles in accordance with district and DOT guidelines. Report defects or maintenance issues to the transportation mechanic or supervisor promptly. Keep the bus clean, and ready for daily operations. Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students, adhering to district rules and safety procedures. Maintain control of students on the bus and handle incidents professionally and according to policy. Maintain a positive and respectful atmosphere that supports student safety and comfort. Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with FERPA regulations. Conduct and participate in required emergency evacuation drills as directed by the district. Follow all state and federal transportation safety regulations. Use established procedures in the event of an accident, medical emergency, or vehicle breakdown. Report accidents, incidents, or unsafe conditions immediately. Know how to use all onboard safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and radios. Maintain regular communication regarding route changes, delays, or incidents. Build positive relationships with parents, school staff, and students. Attend mandatory annual in-service training sessions, refresher courses, and certification renewals. Adhere to district policies on ethics, conduct, and confidentiality. Maintain good attendance and punctuality. May be required to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, or be on-call for emergencies. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or Superintendent.
