Position Objective :
The Community Shuttle Bus Driver provides safe, reliable, and courteous transportation for Township residents and visitors ("Passengers") to destinations primarily within Upper Merion Township, with occasional travel outside the Township. This position involves operating Township shuttle vehicles, assisting passengers, maintaining vehicle safety, adhering to scheduled routes, and delivering exceptional customer service while promoting passenger comfort and well-being. This is a part-time position, typically scheduled 20 to 29 hours per week.
Essential Job Functions :
- Operate a community shuttle bus or lift-equipped passenger van safely and in accordance with all federal, state, local traffic laws and Township policies.
- Transport Passengers to designated locations, including the Township Building, Community Center, shopping centers, medical appointments, and approved recreational outings.
- Provide courteous door-to-door assistance, including helping Passengers board and exit the vehicle and assisting with walkers, wheelchairs, mobility devices, packages, and personal belongings.
- Operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement systems properly to ensure passenger safety.
- Conduct and document required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, and report safety concerns or mechanical issues immediately.
- Keep vehicles clean, fueled, and in safe operating condition; coordinate routine maintenance and repairs in accordance with established Township procedures.
- Maintain daily schedules and communicate delays, route changes, or service interruptions to Public Works staff and Passengers as appropriate.
- Maintain required records accurately, including passenger attendance, mileage, vehicle inspections, and trip logs.
- Monitor Passengers during transport for signs of illness, distress, or emergencies and respond appropriately, including requesting emergency assistance when necessary.
- Report all accidents, incidents, injuries, property damage, or unusual occurrences promptly to a supervisor and assist in completing required documentation.
- Inspect the vehicle after each route to ensure that no passengers or personal belongings remain on board.
- Respond professionally to inquiries regarding Community Shuttle services.
- Attend required meetings, safety training, and continuing education programs.
- Maintain a professional appearance and comply with Township dress code requirements.
- Assist with other Public Works assignments when shuttle services are unavailable due to weather, maintenance, or operational needs.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods, generally 4-6 hours per shift.
- Ability to safely enter and exit vehicles repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 pounds, including operation of vehicle controls and handling of passenger packages, personal belongings, and folded mobility aids.
- Ability to push, pull, guide, and maneuver occupied wheelchairs and other mobility devices, including up and down ramps and lifts, and to bend, stoop, or kneel to operate securement systems; passengers are assisted using mechanical lift/ramp equipment and proper technique, not manual lifting of a passenger's body weight.
- Ability to maintain constant visual acuity, with frequent hearing and verbal communication.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and moderate noise environments with frequent public interaction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of safe operation of passenger buses or vans under varying traffic, weather, and road conditions.
- Working knowledge of Pennsylvania motor vehicle laws, defensive driving techniques, and vehicle safety practices.
- Knowledge of Township streets and surrounding roadways or the ability to quickly learn designated routes.
- Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance sufficient to recognize mechanical problems and perform routine operational checks.
- Understanding of the transportation needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to safely operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and passenger securement equipment.
- Ability to perform required vehicle inspections and recognize conditions requiring maintenance or repair.
- Ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately during emergencies or difficult situations.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with Passengers, coworkers, and the public.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professionalism in all interactions.
- Ability to adapt to changing schedules, priorities, and operational needs.
- Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or special events as assigned.
- Ability to successfully complete required background investigations, physical examinations, and pre-employment/random drug testing.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years of verifiable driving experience.
- Previous experience operating passenger transportation vehicles is preferred.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Possess and maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) endorsement is not required to operate this vehicle but is preferred; School Bus (S) endorsement and air brake qualification are also preferred.
- Must maintain all medical certifications and licensing required by law throughout employment.
- Clean driving record acceptable to the Township's insurance carrier. First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications are preferred.
- ADA passenger assistance training or comparable accessibility training is preferred.
- Has current: PA Child Abuse; PA Criminal background check; and FBI fingerprint clearances or ability to obtain them.
