Job Description

Yamhill County Sheriff's Office is actively recruiting to create a pool of diverse candidates eligible for anticipated seasonal part-time certified Marine Boat Captains (MBC) to work 12 - 36 hours per week. The anticipated duration of this position is approximately 3.5 months from Memorial Day to Labor Day 2027. Regular work days are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with occasional weekday shifts as needed. Marine Boat Captains focus on boater safety through education and enforcement, including the enforcement of criminal laws. This position receives direction from the program manager sergeant, supervising sergeants, and the division commander. Duties around and on the waterways of Yamhill County include, but are not limited to, performing safety inspections and examinations of various water craft and equipment, responding to rescues, boating accidents, or other emergencies, and making appearances at safety fairs and other events. This position is not represented and is non-benefitted. Please refer to the Marine Boat Captain classification specification for more details. The Candidate The successful candidates must be available to regularly work scheduled 10-hour or 12-hour shifts on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between 0800 and midnight. Position will also require occasional weekday shifts. The successful candidates will possess good moral character, demonstrate strong customer service and communication skills, and put forth a professional image. They are skilled, highly motivated, self-directed candidates with strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, as well as skill in communicating effectively with individuals during difficult and often stressful situations. OSMB SWIM TEST
All candidates who do not have a passing Swim Test on file with Oregon State Marine Board (via Marine Academy completion) will be required to participate in an agency-hosted swim test before Sheriff's Interview/Conditional Offer date (post-interview step). ______________________________________________

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Please refer to the Marine Boat Captain classification specifications for the official job description and required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Applicants must be in current service as a certified marine deputy in good standing with a law enforcement agency in Oregon; or a current certified law enforcement officer in good standing with a law enforcement agency in Oregon with at least six months of certified service; or a retired certified law enforcement officer in good standing at time of retirement from a law enforcement agency; or in current service as a solo-qualified certified reserve who has successfully completed a police reserve academy and is in good standing with a law enforcement agency in Oregon. Applicants who possess current Lifeguarding certification, CPR/First Aid certification, and/or an Oregon Boater Education card are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional preference may be given to those applicants that are fluent in English and Spanish. Must be able to pass swim standards as set forth by the OSMB and Oregon State Sheriffs' Association. Must obtain an Oregon Boater Education card (if not already in possession). Upon selection, candidates who have not previously successfully completed the Oregon State Marine Board (OSMB) Marine Academy will be required to successfully complete the agency-provided 2027 OSMB Marine Academy (Spring 2027; location TBD). Ability to secure and maintain a driver's license valid in the state of Oregon. Will be required to drive a County vehicle. Employees authorized to operate a private vehicle on County business are required to carry a valid driver's license and liability insurance minimums as outlined in
ORS 806.070.
Will be subject to successful completion of a personal background check including, but not limited to, criminal, civil, driving, military, educational, and employment history pursuant to
OAR 259-008-0015.

The incumbent typically works on a boat and in outdoor areas, using marine equipment as needed with associated noise levels and in varying weather conditions. Additionally, the incumbent will work in an office environment using a computer, telephone, and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise levels in these work environments will be typical to those of either an outdoor area on or near a body of water and/or that of an office. Work also may involve travel to meetings. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day. The employee is regularly required to possess the strength and stamina to operate a water vessel for long periods of time and to embark and disembark quickly and frequently; and to bend and reach to conduct inspections/investigations; to physically restrain uncooperative and violent individuals, and to carry equipment and supplies. Must be able to meet all requirements as designated in the job task analysis of a police officer on file with DPSST. Contact with the public in a variety of environments may risk exposure to persons under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, emotional individuals, resistive/combative persons, personally dangerous individuals and circumstances including dead, injured, and/or sick individuals, exposure to individuals with communicable diseases, and contact with wild and/or domestic animals.
