Full Job Description Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Public Services Director, performs a variety of skilled mechanical tasks, including servicing and repairing City vehicles, small engine and off-road equipment to keep all mechanical equipment operating efficiently and effectively. At the discretion of the Public Services Director this position may be assigned to provide Animal Control duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs annual preventive maintenance to all City owned vehicles and equipment. Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments; hand, electric, and air-driven tools. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed. Performs hydraulic diagnosis and repairs. Repairs all brake systems including airbrake, ABS, hydraulic and heavy duty. Performs OBD2 systems diagnosis and repairs. Able to fabricate and weld. Performs body work, painting, lettering, and striping of vehicles. Performs two-way radio installation and diagnosis. Performs maintenance and general repairs to engines, drive train, suspension, steering, rear axles, charging and starter system, fuel system, lighting, heating and cooling system. Installs and maintains emergency lights and sirens. Coordinates with outside vendors to perform maintenance work as necessary. Maintains inventory of parts and hardware. Maintains vehicle maintenance records. May be required to perform Animal Control Duties as assigned by the Public Services Director in accordance with the Animal Control policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Experience:
Thorough knowledge and previous experience of automotive mechanics, gas and diesel engines, fuel injection systems, electrical systems, repair/maintenance of off-road equipment required. Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management or closely related field. Maintaining a good driving record with a valid State of Michigan CDL Class B and a DOT Medical Card is required. Subject to DOT random drug/alcohol testing as mandated by DOT regulations. Must be certified State of Michigan Mechanic or National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, and maintain this certification. Experienced with welding equipment required. Must possess the ability to work with little or no supervision, be detail oriented, work within deadlines and to work effectively under stress and changes in work priorities.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondences and memorandums; capable of writing correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to public, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; possess the ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

Training Requirements:
At the discretion of the Public Services Director this position may be required to attend training, continuing education training, seminars and receive certifications for specific work related to this position.
