Job Description

Board member opportunity Onward is currently accepting applications for its board. Board members serve a three-year term beginning in January 2027. Board members help guide the organization's mission, provide strategic and financial oversight, support fundraising efforts, and serve as ambassadors for Onward in the community. Mission:
Help young adults who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability by providing stable housing and support. Who we're looking for Onward is seeking board candidates who are passionate about helping young adults move from housing instability and homelessness to independence. We especially encourage applications from individuals who: Have lived experience with housing instability or homelessness. Bring perspectives that reflect the communities we serve, including those of people from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic experiences, LGBTQIA+ communities, and younger adults (under age 40). Bring experience in nonprofit leadership, social work, youth services, or related fields. Have expertise in public relations, marketing, communications, or brand strategy. Above all, we are seeking candidates who share Onward's values of compassion, collaboration, and community and who are excited to help shape the future of a growing organization. Board structure The Board of Directors consists of 12 individuals. Directors serve for a term of three years and are elected so that approximately one-third of the directors are elected each year. Directors may serve up to two terms. Board officers include President, Vice President/Immediate Past President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Board currently meets from 6:30-8 pm on the first Monday of each month. The majority of meetings are held in person in Eden Prairie, MN. Board members also serve on committees that report to the Board of Directors.
Primary committees currently include:
Operations Finance External Relations Development Governance Board members are not compensated for their services. Board duties The Board of Directors is legally and ethically responsible for all activities of the organization. To this end, board members: Determine how the organization will carry out its mission through long and short-range planning. Adopt an annual budget and provide fiscal oversight. Evaluate board performance and overall performance of the organization in achieving its mission. Establish policies for the effective management of the organization. Monitor and evaluate programs, outcomes, impact, and performance of the organization. Responsibilities/expectations Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in all board meetings. Serve on at least one committee. Participate in fundraising efforts. Participate in other programs and events. Serve as an ambassador of the organization by knowing the mission and sharing the story, enhancing the organization's public image, and cultivating supporters. Make an annual gift (according to each member's circumstances) to achieve 100% board giving. Time commitment Board members typically spend 5-12 hours per month, including attending monthly board meetings, committee meetings, and completing work outside of board meetings.
