Job Description

The Blue Hill Observatory & Science Center — home to the longest continuous weather record in the United States — is expanding its Board of Directors and seeking accomplished senior leaders to join at a pivotal moment in our 141-year history.
ABOUT THE OBSERVATORY
Founded in 1885 and designated a National Historic Landmark, the Blue Hill Observatory advances public understanding of Earth's weather, climate, and environmental systems. As both an active scientific institution and a beloved community resource, the Observatory connects climate research, education, and public engagement in ways that matter now more than ever.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Board members provide strategic leadership, financial stewardship, and institutional ambassadorship. This is stewardship of a 141-year scientific legacy — not a typical board role.
WE ARE ESPECIALLY SEEKING LEADERS IN
→ Philanthropy & major gifts → Corporate partnerships & business development → Finance, law & nonprofit governance → Climate & science → Media & communications → Education & public engagement
RESPONSIBILITIES
→ Provide mission-driven governance and long-term strategic direction → Partner with the Executive Director on strategic priorities and growth → Serve as a visible ambassador and leverage professional networks → Support resource development including an annual leadership-level gift → Participate in quarterly board meetings and at least one committee → Help identify and recruit high-caliber board candidates
BOARD STRUCTURE
Term:
3 years, renewable once →
Meetings:
Quarterly + committee work →
Giving:
Leadership-level annual gift, 100% board participation → Open seats: 4+ positions available
QUALIFICATIONS
Senior-level leadership experience (C-suite, founder, or equivalent), a track record of professional achievement, strong networks, and a genuine interest in science, climate, education, or public service.
